You're right - I can't name a better game than PoE for me atm.
Played some bangers growing up - Killer Instinct/Mortal Kombat 3 SNES, Goldeneye/Mario Kart/Super Smash Bros N64, Age of Empires 2/Starcraft/Unreal Tournament/Warcraft 3 (custom games)/Diablo 2 PC. And a few honorable mentions - Age of Wonders PC, Majesty PC, The Mighty Quest for Epic Loot PC, Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare PC. Loved all them games growing up and could spend a weekend playing them again - unless there's a new PoE league that is. "The key to winning any fight is simply staying alive." " What is a "massive" budget? GGG had $117m revenue / $54.4m ($80.9m before taxes) profit in 2021 and $105m revenue / $44.9m ($62.4m before taxes) profit in 2021. Their operating expenses were around $30m in both years. Source: https://app.companiesoffice.govt.nz/companies/app/service/services/documents/59EBAEC469A7B17819CAFB716AD71C5D This means they could literally double their operating expenses and still make a hefty profit. They only make a single game, which by this point they must have invested well over 100 million dollars into over the last 10 years. For comparison, GTA V had a budget of 265 million dollars. Shadow of the Tomb Raider: 135 million. Not sure what Diablo III had as a budget, but a quick Google search suggests that Diablo III is a lower-budget title than PoE. I've played a lot of games in my life. I would say in order the ones that I played the most were:
Diablo 2 Super Smash Bros. Melee Team Fortress 2 DOTA 2 Hearthstone Path of Exile Slay the Spire One of my favorite games of all time was Prey(2017) but that's not really comparable to the aforementioned games that have near infinite replayability. I think Path of Exile is my favorite because even after years of playing it and loving it, I still have more left to learn than I've learned so far. |

" You are mixing some things , also business doesn't work like you're imagining. To put things roughly into perspective: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() GGG is tiny dude. ps I would put money that right now if you would try to make GTA V and 2022 PoE from ground up, GTA would be simpler game to make, by a big margin. I'm not going to say all of them are obviously better, I'll just say that in the current game situation I've had more fun playing the DIABLO 3 season than playing this game, and that's not a compliment to Diablo 3

" How am I mixing things up, I am just quoting publicly available numbers...? " Maybe, but that doesn't mean that the budget for PoE is small. Most game companies make a lot of games, GGG makes only one. The budget for PoE is pretty large, and GGG isn't that tiny indie developer any more. They make tens of millions in profit each year. " They need to pay their shareholders, invest further into company etc. Yeah they made money. But, on their 30 mil/year budget for the whole company running costs, other companies like you said have hundreds of millions just for single game development. Tens of millions is pocket change in AAA ballcourt. They give that just on marketing. Nevertheless this game wouldn't be what it is today if it was under Blizzard for example. GGG is like Spartans, small but feisty army. And they are keeping it real. Look at their web page. lol https://www.grindinggear.com/ Also i think that people forget where this game was just 4 years ago. Lab was the content.
