Is this the best game ever?

I have only few "special" games in my heart. 1- Diablo 1/2
2- Quake
3- PoE
They are like wifes. All other games ,even if they good ,are like short term lovers xD
Amazing so many quake fans here.

100% agree. If it's not POE, it's Quake that takes the cake (Quakeworld/Quake 1 for the win).

No FPS has ever come close to the insanity and speed and reflexes of Quake 1.

PS if there is anyone in Aus, I challenge you to a duel.

There is no real comparison.... but its fun to visit memory lane.

Games that compare:

Half-life 1 and 2
Heroes of Might and Magic 3
Darks Souls, DS2, DS3
Quake
World of Warcraft (first 5 or so years)
Everquest
Maybe Elden Ring (once they fix the bugs)
I'm an old dog

Master of Orion is still #1 for me

Not Even close.

Sacrifice, Gothic 1 and 2, Arx Fatalis, Dark Souls, Morrowind, Evil Islands, Original War, Vampires The Masqarade. We could keep going for a while.

this is a classy list, I actually just replayed Arx Fatalis last month and was hmmm'ing and haa'ing at the mechanics the whole way now i'm viewing it was more experienced eyes.

Still get cross about how hard it is to draw yog though.. Ahm.. YOG
I love this game! I stopped playing for a bit because it became too intensive for me, as a newbie, to get ahead and get currency, this part was really a tough learning curve.

Speaking in general when playing a season, the main drawback for me was as described above. But this season I am loving it and am noticing currency drops are much better and more realistic for casual players like myself. It has made me more active and immersed into the game for sure!
It is a very good game for sure. Games that manage to hold your attention for this long are rare.

currency drops are better, but far not enough if you want to make your own gear. It is barely enough to trade in the market for common gear but you can forget exalt or mirror tier gear with that kind of currency drop.

Once again, you're forced to trade to cut the grind...
Path of Exile is a Casino for gambling addicts.
Gambling is not fun nor a game mechanic...

Ultima Online got completely stomped by the fact that it existed at the same time as Starcraft was just beginning.

Interesting story:

My mother was fond of Summer camps, and right when Starcraft/UO were just babies, that camp was a computer camp.

2 weeks to learn things like Basic, C+, and other root computer programming, website programming, and if we were accelerated in our advancement, we got to join a school team and compete in Starcraft tournaments.

I saw the two male counselors playing a little Ultima Online, while the rest of us were extremely green to Starcraft, and didn't know that it was going to be one of the worst hacked games of all time when competing with 32 other schools.

Ofc, I'd also never heard of Ghost in the Shell at that time either (It was roughly 1999 and the movie was released 1997), and saw that the counselors had a copy, and campaigned to get to watch it for one of our evening movies.

Instead, the counselors' boss..... a grumpy conservative old hag.... made us watch the Princess Bride, and Ghost in the Shell was off limits (nudity/violence, etc). We were all guys.

This was literally the only summer camp I got Kicked Out of - Twice - for apparent bullying. Which is funny... because I've been to religious camps, scout camps, and military camps as well.... where I was always the one bullied. It turned out that even having a 'mild' identity in a computer camp is a no-no, because the trope about nerds and being wet blankets is actually real. Getting too close to someone's space is bullying. Knowing some Tae kwon do you demonstrate for a group movie you're going to present on the last day, is dangerous and scary (not ever directed at any students, mind you). I don't even know to this day who it was or what I supposedly did, but either the camp boss concocted this crap or someone legitimately felt threatened enough to get me kicked out twice - after a petition to stay. Something beyond Big Bang Theory.

Games I played there:
Diib's Dilemma on Randomthoughts.net

Starcraft

3-D Quake in a fully built Game Cave designed to be more like virtual reality.

VERY SMALL Ultima Online (bored me)
