Is this the best game ever?

Not Even close.

Sacrifice, Gothic 1 and 2, Arx Fatalis, Dark Souls, Morrowind, Evil Islands, Original War, Vampires The Masqarade. We could keep going for a while.

You are a weirdo if you truly believe that those games are better than POE.

Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has one.

This wins the thread. lmao
"Best" if we design a metric after the fact to make it "best". I still enjoy playing through Borderlands 1 every now and then. That game hits a sweet spot. BL2 had some of that, but missed the mark. B3 is trash. I really miss games that just quit fucking with stuff that they got right.

I dont "think", they just are.
It's definitely the game that has managed to hold my attention the longest. We're closing in on ten years, and I still love it. But I think that speaks more about the quantity than the quality. Still, PoE is definitely on my top ten list.

But the games that have made the most impact on me as a gamer over the years (while not necessarily being "the best")

- Heroes of Might and Magic 2 and 3
- Broken Sword 1 and 2
- Monkey Island 1 and 2
- X-Com: Enemy Unknown (The original. Maybe it was named "UFO Defense" on PC).
- Diablo 2: LoD
- The Witcher 3
- Fallout 3 and New Vegas
- Oblivion
- Gothic 1 and 2 (glad to see other Gothic players here).

Would I consider those "the best games ever"? No, I'm too subjective.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

Hmm, only heard Dark souls of that list (which is obviously worse then PoE). Haven't heard any of the other games, so most likely they are not better than PoE as well.

It only means that you dont know many games. Living under a rock must suck major balls.

Dude. I had to look those games up and none of them were award winning titles at all, and most are ancient and had better predecessors. Everquest was far better than Gothic on a much weaker requirement spectrum.

Special note on Vampire the Masquerade: I still have the original copy from Troika, as well as edited copies that unlocked all the archived chapters/data that were partial and fractal (but mostly recreated).

It was a bloody mess of glitches, cheats, unchallenging gameplay, was defunded, never patched, and it was purely single player. They even created Lore than didn't quite fit into the VTM universe to make some race interactions succinct. The Werewolf scene is just incomplete. The Malkavian Mansion is glitchy as F. The options interacting with the Undertaker in Hollywood loop and don't have conclusions.

You could literally start with all disciplines maxed simply by going back and reallocating them.

What it did right:

It's VtM. Period.
It got Chiasm, Darling Violetta, Ministry, Genitorturers, and Lacuna Coil to license music for the Soundtrack.

Haunted Mansion was one of the first really spooky playthrough areas that didn't require monsters in it to really scare you crapless on a video game.

Most players just played VTM because of tribalism, not because it was a good game. (Holla to all you bloodsuckers out there; I love my Steak Tartar!)

Here's my overall response to the thread: Yes, POE is one of the best games ever created. (not the most profitable, not the most innovative, not the best replay).

Here's Why:

1) It's still following its originating principal envisioned in 2006 for the 2013 product: A game like Diablo II that could continually evolve, and self reset through patches and leagues, that stays core to its lore.

2) It was never designed as a cash grab or for mass appeal. It was designed for those interested in it, and spread almost entirely only in that niche.

3) It was designed to be able to be ran out of a small studio, for industry tiny upkeep, and for new content to not compromise old, making less requirements for integration.

4) There's no long term pressure to overplay it.

That's why I call it the unkillable, cockroach of a game. It's got a near perfect formula to survive in the hands of the founders.

Most games that have close to this formula, usually only achieve it after selling to a second party, being stripped down to the bones, and sold as something like "Unchained," usually at the cost of there never being new content. And then, it doesn't fulfill #3.

There are more enjoyable games.
There are better money makers.

It's just a good game.
ARPG ?, Yes!
PoE is certainly the best game I’ve played by the two metrics companies care about. Time and money spent on it.

It’s not even close.
Gothic 1 and 2 are definitely one of my favourity games... alongside Monkey Island and of course Diablo 2.

But I wouldn't call any of them the best game ever.

The best game would have to be perfect in every aspect... so safe to say, there won't ever be one.

/edit: also, did someone really compare Gothic to an MMORPG?
