Because one minute the house is empty, the next it's crowded. How would you try to keep track of everything? And besides, I collect books in real life. (got more than 500, so I've been doing it for a while.) I think the fun part is the hunt, not having a finished collection. For instance, I'm collecting Indiana Jones-novels. As you might know, Bantam Books published twelve of them some years ago. I didn't learn about it until recently, so I ordered four of them. One sucked (Genesis Deluge), but two were awesome (Philosopher's Stone and Secret of the Sphinx. Haven't read the last (Hollow Earth) yet.) But for the rest? If I wanted to, I could go to an online bookstore right now and order the rest of them. That way I would have the full collection in no time. But although I did order three more a few days ago, I deliberately avoided ordering the rest. Not because I couldn't afford them. That I can, and then some. But I don't want all of them at once. I want just a few of them now, then the rest later. It makes it a lot more fun to look for them and try to track them down. In fact, there's one book (Indy and the Army of the dead) that was published back in 2009 by a different publisher, and I still haven't been able to find it. Or I found it on Amazon, com, but they don't ship it to Norway for some reason. Finding someone who can sell it to me can be tricky, but that's the fun part. One day I will, and then it will all be worth it.
It's the same with trophies in your house in a game. I don't wnat them all showing up at once. I want just one. I will then try to get another one, and it will show up in my house. Then I'll get another one, and another one, and so on until I have them all. It will take forever, but I'm not in a hurry. Quite the contrary. Once I got them all, what do I do then? On a related note, that's why I don't care about endgame in MMORPGs. I don't want to reach the highest level or finish the story, as once I do, what am I supposed to do when there's nothing more to gain? The game would be boring and lifeless quickly. I was lvl 63 (of 65) in Lord of the Rings Online, but I stopped doing quests after that. Not becausse they were too hard or too boring, but because I didn't want to reach the highest level and finish the quest I'd been on the last two years. Dungeon Defenders has a trophy system very similar to what we're describing and it works just fine. All the trophies are on display and anyone visiting your tavern can easily see which achievements you've unlocked. There's also a dummy in the tavern that you can attack for information about your true DPS. It's quite a nice setup and I think it'd work well in Exile.
Still, this is a LONG way off, I think. I don't think I saw any promises of titles and achievements and I am not expecting that this feature will ever be added. If it did, though, that'd help it, not hurt it. |

Achievments add absolutely nothing to the game. Prior to achievements people played games and achieved quite difficult feats without some text popping up telling them what they just did. If I kill Chatters with only my fists, I'm completely aware I've done so. Equally I do not care if I've killed ten zombies or one million zombies, it's inevitable in this game that I'm going to kill some zombies. It really isn't necessary to have it as a means of showing off, this is what gear and levels do automatically. Adding them in simply because it's what most triple A titles do is also devoid of any merit, what attracts me to PoE and GGG is that they're trying to break away from many of the modern day norms in gaming. As I said previously I could stomach a tab that let you know some stats if you really must have such a thing, but even that is pushing it for me. I would much rather see GGG spend the time on other gameplay mechanics that actually improve the game. If you can't enjoy a game without them, may I suggest an Activision Blizzard title?

Achievements, They can be, but without any in-game rewards and they need to be done well (no First Blood,My Little Kiwi,Manic Gamer [+XX hours played] achievements)...
Those should have a meaning and should be really achievements (XXX Damage from Bow using Marauder "Heavy Shot" or "Passe" when you get 10 critical hits at row). |

Ugh.. I just love how some people could achieve to find "irrelevant" things to do with PoE at best possible way, and bring to the table.

I don't get the hate for achievements. Sure, I can understand the attitude that "we don't need them, we know what we've done", but achievements at their best have always been about bragging rights. If you killed chatters on merciless using your fists as a witch, then you get an achievement and a nice trophy for your "House" or whatever that shows it off and tells what you did when you mouseover it.
It's a simple concept that adds replayability and keeps people busy trying to get them all. With a game like this, they can be hidden achievements too, numbering in the hundreds if need be. Some can be so specific that it might take years for someone to find out about it. That's the fun of it. For example: Complete a run-through of the game on Normal using the same weapon from Act 1 to the end of Act 3 without once deequipping it. It's meaningless, but it's just something else, and there's certainly nothing harmful about it. It's an improvement to the game, it's not a downgrade. If not individual achievements then at least guild/PvP achievements. Last edited by teacherpeter#1699 on May 24, 2012, 10:24:19 AM
