Can Path of Exile compete with Lost Ark and Elden Ring?
I hope the new games indeed draw an audience. Nothing like a bit of competition for a wake-up call.

" Let's be real here, from a business point of view, especially in your peak revenue generating windows (league launch), it really doesn't matter what the game is, if its pulling your customers. I believe that was the reasoning behind the Cyberpunk league delay. With that said I'm sure different titles may have different impacts due to genre relating, but would be naive to think that there are not crossover players. It doesn't matter if Elden Ring isnt an arpg, if the normal PoE player is still interested in playing it over PoE. " I agree with that. Gamers are gamers. We can debate the best of a genre, but I don't think most people are loyal to one genre, so it doesn't really matter. That being said, there is always going to be games released throughout the year and they will pull some players unavoidably. Outside of the huge releases, it doesn't make much sense to adjust releases around other games. D2R which is absolutely in direct competition of POE didn't seem to have a huge impact at the launch of 3.16, given the number of players at the start of the league. Would the numbers have been higher without D2R? Probably. But there is always going to be something. There are notable exceptions though. Cyberpunk was one of the biggest releases of 2020. Even though it appeared to be a large flop in terms of performance, it still had a big pull of players and would have had a big impact on GGG's revenue. Few games had a ramp up like that one did. I agreed with their delay around it, even though I had no intentions of playing it. I don't play a big portfolio of games and rarely know about big titles. Even I knew about Cyberpunk. path of exile post 3.15 can't even compete with path of exile pre 3.15 what makes you think it can compete with other games lmao if it's not another game that kills path of exile it's gonna be chris 4d chess vision that we're too fucking stupid to understand and is why the game is actually heading in a much better way than before so just shut up and donate money for more supporter packs chris really needs the money for that good stuff he must smoke to be able to have his visions

" I didn't know anything about a Cyberpunk. Then again, that name alone would offend ME, being a 37 year old gamer who doesn't associate with emo or punk or 'cyber' at all. I wouldn't even investigate it. Now, a game like Stray, or RE:VIIIAGE would have perked my ears, not because of genre, but because of branding, and the relatable feeling of the word Stray. Lonely, Aloof, and out of place. D2R we knew wouldn't make any impact on POE from the beginning; It offered to revive your old accounts from the 1990s. Why would I want to Download just to play my account from the 1990s that already had everything and had already done over 800 runs + of every boss, cow zone, 3000+ Baal runs? No TY. The only Blizzard games I'd ever retro: Starcraft and Warcraft III. The games I played before I left Blizzard. |

" I played D2 for years, stopping around 2002. I quit because of the repetition of end game. Same boss runs over and over again to get an item to be able to do those same boss runs in a different way. All these games are repetitious, but seeing the same wallpaper over and over got old. I still bought it for the sake of nostalgia. The times I could play it, it was enjoyable. Unfortunately I couldn't log in most of the time as the servers were down so that really put a damper on the experience. I do believe others plowed through that initial release issue and likely chose D2R over POE. Not nearly enough to make a noticeable dent in the starting numbers of 3.16, but I have no doubt there were some. Thanks for all the fish!

Seems like we get these threads every time new games come on board. Wolcen, Last Epoch, Cyberpunk, etc. They all take pull some players, but none have yet to bring the kill shot. Someday a game will and who knows could be one of these, but I doubt it. Lost Ark is fun, but it is overhyped. I have enjoyed playing it a little, a while back. Elden Ring, I have not tried, but looks like a cool game, but quite a bit different and slower paced.
I will say that the longer the POE 2 takes to get here, the more likely something comes along and steals enough of the player base to have a serious impact. At the same time, once they opened the game up across the Asian market they gained a huge player base that tends to stay loyal to games for a long time. I say that even though I have been playing POE, coming up 10 years this summer. (damn I am getting old) A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.

I cancelled my preorder of Ark, New World was a shit show and bought Elden Ring.
Even though Ark is an already existing IP and whatnot, most of the issues for New World were tied to server populations and server side data that all resolved with the host, Amazon. Not sure how Ark is going to be, but I have no intention of jumping feet first into another game I want to burn in hell. Souls games don't generally take a ton of time to beat. I am looking forward to the new league for sure. Last edited by Shardbearer#4393 on Jan 7, 2022, 5:48:27 PM
