Any other Kung Fu/Martial-Arts people here?

I just opened my own Ving Tsun (wing chun) school outside of Detroit. We are a branch of a school that's been downtown in Detroit's Eastern Market for a number of years now.

I was just curious if other people here did martial arts. I've been trying to get a bunch of gamers into my school, and anytime I go into a GameStop and give the workers some flyers, they all say "Oh, I'd totally like to do that!" Then they all tell me how much they loved the Ip Man movie.

And then none of the gamers ever show up :P

Here's an old flyer I made for the place:

I've had fun making flyers. I even did a bunch of joke ones that maybe I'll share in here.

And right now, I'm trying to figure out more fund-raising stuff because I'm trying to get a sign on the building. It'll look something like this:

I train six harmonious fist.

For a gamer, it is kind of hard to find time to do martial arts IMO. Gamers have their own kung fu, and it takes up most of their time.

Me for example, trains martial arts an hour a day, but trains gaming skillz for 4 hours or more, and then some more.

Good luck on your venture brother. *courtesy bow*

I've only been able to find some videos on forms. Do you have any two-person drills? "Sparring"?

Just to try and get some discussion too, I'll upload a video of me playing some of the Jong, everybody's favorite form in the world. ;)

(Dang you spellcheck! It's "Jong"!!! As in "Muk Yan Jong"! Not "John" or "Hong" or "gong" or "Tony" or "hinges" or anything else you keep changing it to!)

I grew up in Tae Kwon Do. By which I mean from the ages of 6-12 I easily spent more than 60 hours a week attending classes. I fell out of it by the age of 12 due to extraneous medical reasons at the time. But those were easily the best days of my life, I was 210% devoted to my discipline, and that experience has had nothing short of having everything to do with shaping me into the man I have become today. To this day I am dieing to get back in, but then there's been this entry barrier: $$. Back then I had my grandpa who made damn sure I got everything I needed. Now, on my own and providing for my wife and I, I just cannot do it. Hopefully soon though :) As I said: I've been dieing to get back in.

So yeah, if you're on the fence about joining a school somewhere. Do it. It will be the best thing you've ever done!

Sifu likes to make a new video every year, you can see the other stuff in the channel. There was one pair exercise being performed by his daugthers.

Our school is the kung fu of the Ye Family, consists of other schools: Six harmony, Shaolin, Nature boxing, and Quigong.

...and yes, we shoot chopsticks :)

Edit: 6 harmonious fist is kind of a lost art, so you won't see it as much as the popular one's such as wing chun and karate.

Finger pushups! I really liked the toothbrush sticking out of the cardboard too. :P

The push-hands type drill is interesting, but I'm curious how much of that is maybe an uke giving posture up (4:15 and some of the other parts). Is that a drill where one person is the uke though? Or are both trying to stop the other person equally? What's the nature of the drill? What makes one "better" at it?

Wait, did I see nunchucks somewhere? 7:31 looks like a kwan, which we use in my Ving Tsun school some, but only at very advanced levels. There is some Jong stuff in there too. Do you guys pick up weapons and forms from other styles or are those central to 6 Harmonious Fists?

That drill, there is definitely a receiver(uke), like you do it in the first few tries, then try to counter that, then counter it again, etc. Basic training exercises can improve this, and of course, more practice on a person, or wooden dummies.

Nunchucks, hook swords, broad swords, kwan dao, jian, sticks, hammer, needle, nine ring greatsword. Mostly shaolin school weapons, and has six harmonious styles, and more battle field combat oriented. The Ye family were like ancient chinese soldiers: less fluff, more tech kind of moves.

I've been very interested in martial arts, and I took a few lessons in both judo and karate in terms of self defense. I'm also good at using a stick if it comes to something of that sort.

Though I really want to learn Sambo from a fellow who's very good at it.

Sword Aikido?

We follow the style of Shoji Nishio Sensei (short summary of his life). Aikido has strong roots in the old sword arts and O Sensei himself practiced with the sword a lot. Nishio Sensei was always very interested in this aspect of Aikido and developed sword (bokken) and staff versions for his Aikido techniques as well as a separate way of Iaido. He always used to say that you can't understand Aikido if you don't understand the sword and it's certainly true for his style. :-) Also, you don't need a partner for Iaido which makes it a nice way of training if nobody is available (I spent a few years on a tiny offshore island where this was my only way of practicing).

Aikido Toho Iai on Youtube I actually was at the seminar the clips uploaded by nishioru were filmed :-D
