Any other Kung Fu/Martial-Arts people here?

I've never been able to have a "normal" conversation with a Krav practitioner. I've had a number of them tell me "Yeah, it's the best martial art ever, and I feel totally confident that I could handle any situation if anyone tried anything on me. I trained it for one month three summers ago."

Bwahahah, I have the exact same experience with krav people, never found anyone who has something substantial to say about it and the experience to back it up.

Chew bubblegum. Kick ass. MT has long been considered one of the best arts for self-defense, simply because you will learn to get your ass beat, while staying up, and staying dangerous. And contrary to the schools you'll find of the arts above, there are very few "bad" MT schools out there. In fact, I'd argue that probably the most important skill any martial art will teach you is how to take a punch. Muay Thai/Boxing/Kyokushin are best at this overall.

This is what my previous experience has taught me too. Hard fists and hard chin takes the money. Bonus points for imagination and creativity.

If you're wanting more stuff for your Security work, of course you can't just kick out someone's legs. I'd highly recommend Judo though. You'll get all the "good stuff" that KM, Systema, or Defendo say that they teach, but you'll get it in a much deeper, more focused way. For instace, instead of learning the uchi-mata "move" that all of those other arts will "teach" you, you'll learn how to set that up, make it work against 100 different positions, make it work even if you don't have the right position, and make it work no matter what is happening to you at the time. Again, the "moves" themselves are rather meaningless.

Tried judo but never really got into it, guess mostly due to my build. I'm long and slim and judo seems to favor short and stocky.

Systema is often looked at as some of the BS "no touch" Aikido stuff.

Got to correct you on this one, aikido is not one of these "this is magic" arts. It's really solid with a lot of small-joint locks, throws and upright wrestling. Especially the locks have been really useful so far in my job.

but thanks anyway for your opinions, I think I'm going to check out the local Muay Thai school (it's closer too so I have less excuses not to go as many times a week as I can).

That's what I thought growing up, but I have seen and met a few skinny and tall Judo guys now. You have to always remember too: all that BJJ ground stuff comes right from Judo. It has a very different culture than most MAs though, and that's one that a lot of people have issues with too (as in, it's "club" atmosphere, and how there typically aren't any "Judo Schools").

Oh, I didn't mean all Aikido. I mean specifically the BS brands of it :P That looks more like this, and less like wrestling: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AgvdftwToo

:P

Don't worry though. I do the _ing _un. The style has a plethora of bad schools out there.

Looks like those guys should maybe trade their hakamas for tutus, that was ridiculous! :D

Also just found out that there is a Jeet Kune Do (Concepts branch) school in the town, prolly gonna check that out too.
