Any other Kung Fu/Martial-Arts people here?

I did BJJ for a few months and then moved, I haven't pursued any new places to learn it since I moved.

A lot of those Bruce Lee quotes were actually things said by his sifu (Ip Man) and other people in kung fu. Bruce Lee just helped make them sound better in English (plus he was used to talking more flowery, since he was a Philosophy major in college).

Bruce Lee was just generally good at marketing himself though. For instance, his "one inch punch" is just the basic Wing Chun punch, made to look magical. It takes me about 30 seconds to show someone how to do the thing :P He just made it look special, even though it's just a basic idea.

I did too right after "The Karate Kid" came out. :P I had a friend in Maryland who was really into it though. He spoke Korean, and lived for a while at a Korean Buddhist temple.

He was a short, bald German.

Sambo

Judo (and Sambo) is one of those arts where there are almost no bad schools (I do Ving Tsun/Wing Chun, and there are TONS of terrible Wing Chun schools and teachers). I've known some of the best Judo guys in the world, and let me tell you, had I known more about Judo when I was younger I probably would have gotten into it and stuck with it forever. But I got seriously into my Ving Tsun school before I learned just how good it was.

Growing up, I always thought Judo was for fat old guys. :P

(Yes, I know some fat old Judo guys. They are totally bad-ass though.)

The one concern I have with Judo is that so few of the masters are very well taken care of. I have met and hung out with one of the top Judoka in the world, and really, I thought the guy should have been rich and never having to worry about money. It made me sad that wasn't the case (and it was nice getting some of his dinners paid for while out watching UFCs together).

No, but the post reminded me of this video. Check out the first bit or so to get the idea... then check out the first comment. I guess the video itself is cool too, if you're into martial arts at all. But the comment is really what makes it.

Lol. And here is something I was saying earlier. I do Ving Tsun (wing chun). There is lots of terrible wing chun out there. That video is god-fucking-awful wing chun. I've been hit by strikes like that. They sometimes might hurt, but they don't end a fight. They sting, but they don't knock anybody down. They don't destroy posture. They don't move structure.

No tsui mah, no chi sao.

Nowhere near enough exploding heads I'm afraid.

i trained goju ryu karate doh (the hard/soft open handed way of pain ) for a coupla years . old school okinawan kempo mixed with white crane kung fu. with plenty of sand pan / conditioning exercises to create micro fractures on your bones , which in turn cause them to compact thus creating weapons (literally !) out of your hands /elbows / shins /knees . not a sports martial art . but great fun :)

these days im much less active :( but hopefully that'll change soon :) think i may give kickboxing a try

Martial arts, ho!

Got 8 years of aikido, 3 years of kickboxing (with a dash of muay thai here and there), some random one-summer experiences (last one was historical European fencing) and some career related training (working in security) under my belt. Moved recently to a new town and now I've been thinking of taking up systema or muay thai.

Not really familiar with the more pragmatic soldier combat systems, can anyone give me a summary of differences between arts like krav maga, systema, defendo etc? I've tried KM once and it didn't really impress me and I've understood that defendo is strongly law enforcement-oriented.

I've looked into a number of different arts in my time, and these are my general opinions of the things you've mentioned. Granted, there are always exceptions, and I'm sure there are schools out there that "do it for real", but these are my general assessments:

"

krav maga,

I've never been able to have a "normal" conversation with a Krav practitioner. I've had a number of them tell me "Yeah, it's the best martial art ever, and I feel totally confident that I could handle any situation if anyone tried anything on me. I trained it for one month three summers ago."

People don't know anything after practicing some "moves" for a month. KM seems very good at marketing this idea though.

In fact, I'd wager, that nobody learns anything by learning "moves", and this is my biggest gripe with Krav. It seems to be like standard RBSD bullcrap (reality based self defense). "I could totally defend myself if someone grabs my wrist like this... no not that way... no you have to hold my wrist this way... yeah. Now freeze in place and I'll show you what I would do to a real attacker." Moves are BS. I've seen a couple ideas in Krav that looked worthwhile (the circle things where you do whatever to protect yourself from whatever others are doing all around you), but it still seems focused mainly on step-by-step defenses to non-realistic "attacks".

I'm sure there are some good schools out there (any good school will also teach a lot of firearms practice... not defense), but Krav has jumped so far into marketing and so far away from reality that I find most of it ridiculous.

"
systema

This has a lot, lot, lot of criticism against it. Systema is often looked at as some of the BS "no touch" Aikido stuff. I've yet to meet a serious practitioner of it though who actually maybe knows what he's talking about though.

"
defendo

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPvbiy0eNzQ

Lots more RBSD non-sense from what I can tell. Notice all the setups? Notice the freezing (not every attacker on the street will act as if you are Sub-Zero and respond as if you just threw an ice-ball at them). None of those attacks are close at all to what happens in actuality. For instance, ever have someone bear-hug you for real? They don't squat down and freeze. Also, people don't respond to "pressure point attacks" the same way in a real fight as a friend will in a dojo.

"
Muay Thai

Chew bubblegum. Kick ass. MT has long been considered one of the best arts for self-defense, simply because you will learn to get your ass beat, while staying up, and staying dangerous. And contrary to the schools you'll find of the arts above, there are very few "bad" MT schools out there. In fact, I'd argue that probably the most important skill any martial art will teach you is how to take a punch. Muay Thai/Boxing/Kyokushin are best at this overall.

If you're wanting more stuff for your Security work, of course you can't just kick out someone's legs. I'd highly recommend Judo though. You'll get all the "good stuff" that KM, Systema, or Defendo say that they teach, but you'll get it in a much deeper, more focused way. For instace, instead of learning the uchi-mata "move" that all of those other arts will "teach" you, you'll learn how to set that up, make it work against 100 different positions, make it work even if you don't have the right position, and make it work no matter what is happening to you at the time. Again, the "moves" themselves are rather meaningless.
