But this game has defensive mechanisms it wants to put to use (block, life, armor, es, ev), and in order for these mechanics to be viable, glasscannons need to be non-viable.
Glasscannons will never be viable in PoE, and i dont see GGG changing that for the simple reason that a game that focuses on defensive mechanisms, has higher itemization ceilings and is therefore more complex regarding its itemization system.
If glasscannons were viable, defensive stats on gear would be useless, thus creating/finding the best item ingame is much easier to accomplish (it is as easy as getting 2 affixes correct... instead of having to get all 6 mods correct).
D3 suffers from this problem a lot.
Back when D3 was hard (the first iteration of inferno) you had to make more complex item choices: do you get more allres/armour, or a little bit more damage because the encounters take too long (enrage timer).
After they nerfed everything into the ground and therefore made glasscannons viable, the itemization process has lost all of its complexity.
After the inferno nerf, the itemization process boils down to: get damage, critchance, critdmg, attackspeed, preferrably all of them, and since only getting damage on items is very easy, everyone runs around with pretty godly gear rather fast.
Reducing the complexity of an Arpg is a terrible move, and making glass cannons viable is such a move. I dont see it happening, since GGG knows whats up.
Read your post, disagree with it, there's more to RPGs than ARPG and Diablo and then PoE, but I have no desire to continue the offtopic thing, or even to argue for it in a dedicated topic I could open any time, yet I am not opening it...
Just posting to let you know I read your opinion :)

It would have been nice if you would have told me before pulling me around a bunch of stupid topics.
As long as deaths are something to be avoided, I don't care what GGG does.

What he is saying about D3 is not opinion. It is fact. The game is such a glass cannon fest that they nerfed reflect damage due to all the whiners on the forums complaining that they did WAY too much damage when in actuality it was simply that those players stacked too much damage without suitable survivability. What the game actually needed was MORE things like reflect damage to actually balance DPS and survivability. This, and the lack of a real death penalty, is why the only way to play D3 is Hardcore
If a glass cannon build is viable, in a game like poe, it will be the most efficient way to play. Higher damage = higher clearing speeds = faster xp = more drops = pure efficiency. In poe EVERY character has to devise a strategy for staying alive. This means you cannot mindlessly stack damage and succeed (unlike D3). This is a very very good thing for itemization and build diversity in general. You feel diversity is lacking because you cannot build a glass cannon, I feel the exact opposite. If we were able to build viable glass cannons then there would be zero build diversity.

thepmrc: It comes down to Undon3 openly admitting he never played D1 and got to level 4 in D2 and never played again.
He just doesn't understand, doesn't get it, etc. If he had played either of these games (enough to understand them/mechanics) he'd understand a heck of a lot more about this issue (and all the others).
We can blame him all we want, but so long as he doesn't get it. Our thoughts/opinions are kinda wasted.
I don't usually cut anyone any slack. But after learning about his previous Diablo
experience(s), I find myself in the odd position of wanting to be sympathetic.... let's see how long that lasts lol!

The death mechanic in D2 is laughable compared to PoE, so I have no idea why you are comparing it like that
You say "he doesn't understand". He doesn't need to understand anything. Death in D2 was rare, and the punishment was very leniant
PoE is the oppostite

deteego:
pretty obvious you never got above level 85 in D2 rofl
edit: if you had, you'd probably be crying about the exp loss and the time it took to get it back etc

Its pretty obvious you never gotten above level 85 in PoE, and died, which is the game we are talking about
The exp loss in PoE is 3x higher, I am also completely disregarding other relevant factors (like how much easier its to get killed in PoE)
Levelling in D2 was pretty much irrelevant at 80+, after that all progression was basically loot

play HC deteego, then you don't worry about dying at any level. you survive and keep going, you die, sort loot, delete toon, reroll.
if you're complaining about dying in SC... there's a reason it's called scrubcore

Nice backtracking there, this has nothing to do with what we are talking about
