Is it just me or is Evasion complete garbage?

You cannot evade spells. You know that right?

exactly. and not only crits, but all on-hit effects. bleed, poison, stun, etc etc

evasion alone probably does suck, but you need to supplement it with dodge of course.
with 95% evade (raider can get easily) and 75% dodge that gives you a 98.75% chance to avoid all attack damage.

vs bosses now-a-days its easy enough to play around the mechanics where you won't be getting hit anyway.

some things to keep in mind. even with armor for physical mitigation, it caps out at 90%, and you can still get one shot. maybe it wouldn't be from physical damage, i dunno, but i've played plenty of armor "super tanky" juggs and shit, and i just feel like paper compared to my raider evasion builds.
getting hit every time feels like trash, personally.

there are other ways to get physical mitigation as well. you can still get fortify, you can get damage taken conversion, other less damage taken mechanics like kintsugi.

end game worries about deaths are almost ways going to be coming from spells anyway, because there are less ways to mitigation and avoid spell damage.
you cannot evade spells.
i never said you could evade spells
Evasion/dodge stacking is usually good enough most of the time but if you compare it side by side with the best defense layers it kinda is shit.

One of the tankiest builds out there are guardians. Bunch of these guys run around in hc with 20k+ es and 50k+ armor. A few here and there use that harbinger shield for a flat 20% damage reduction plus immunity to all status ailments and stuns, and then there's the endurance charges, and then the perma 30k vms shield. And obv they play a minion build so before all that, their minions are meatshielding most of the blows. Like how tf do these builds even die.
evasion is in the right spot, there are fewer one shots that kill you.

on a more serious note, one defense isn't saving you, you need several layers. won't help you if you want to level up and the game wants to kill you though

But you can dodge them.

The thing is, an armor character actually has the same mitigation from (elemental) spells as an evasion character (your resistances), while an evasion character should supplement with spell dodge. If an evasion/dodge character is built properly, he often has 60+ attack dodge and 40+ spell dodge (and even more if you're a Raider or utilizing Elusive).

If you supplement that with Aspect of the Cat too, you just don't get hit. "At all". And if you in addition have "physical damage taken as elemental damage" on your chest and helm, you're set "for life".

I feel WAY more tanky on my evasion+dodge character, than I do on my armor characters. Well, especially before VMS became a thing. But we all know VMS will be nerfed next league. GGG can't handle good defensive options. You're not meant to survive in this game.

All your points are good Phrazz but personally I find the dodge/evader falls down because its missing at least 1k life you get for being strength based. Ironically as the builds that take bigger single hits.

It is a real struggle to get them into the 6-7k threshold without gutting your damage whereas you can usually manage between 7-8+ for a strength based pleb.

I get that.

It might just be the ceiling. I think evasion/dodge characters have a higher ceiling, but the investment might be higher too. I've reached 6k+ on my last two evasion/dodge characters, and never got "one-shot". I think the 10+10 dodge and ailment immunity from Raider is pretty underestimated these days.

This league, though, with all that "over-the-top" DoT ground effects coming from Metamorphs, I stayed away from evasion/dodge stacking, even though they have the move speed to tackle it.

I wouldn't call evasion shit. I think squishy is a better term.
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!
theres more and more other ways to gain less damage taken for evasion based characters too, in order to battle the higher damage they usually take from lack of mitigation

kintsugi type of stuff.

also with guard skills and great timing you can get a pretty good effective life pool.

tricksters can get less avoidance total, but pretty massive pools of stay-alive juice as a good hybrid
