what makes PoE 2 be PoE 2?

With the whole 6L switching from gear to gems GGG should be calling PoE 4.0 "Path of Stranger Things" as this change will be so radical that it'll feel like we're playing in the "upside down" world.

But a completely separate main campaign was the only way Chris and company could have their cake and eat it too. What this translates to is that there is a split in the player base, some love the power and speed creep of PoE 1 (run-n-gun shooter style) and others hate it (we want a strategy arpg, not this shooter crap). GGG can't please both camps with only one PoE so the completely new campaign of 7 slower playing acts was devised to try and roll back somewhat to the olden days PoE pace of play. I presume GGG has averaged it out time-wise and determined 7 slower acts of PoE 2 ≈ 10 speed running acts of PoE 1.

My concern (since I'm not an arpg shooter twitch reaction player) is that since the endgame is the same (nothing new for PoE 2) for both campaigns that mapping will still be the same twitch reaction shooter style of play with the same ranged shooting of off-screen enemies and having to be super careful moving up and down so as to not get one-hit shot dead by an off-screen mob gotten too close to before seeing them. The limited iso view of PoE is one of its worst aspects and higher endgame mapping is an endless series of incoming attacks from off-screen creatures such that twitch fast reaction is needed to move or use a defensive flask. That won't change with PoE 4.0 so my biggest problem with PoE won't be fixed with PoE 2. I already can cruise through the acts deathless, it's the endgame where the pace of play is way too fast for my personal taste.
"You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration.

what you like doesn't matter to the masses
Unfortunately it is the new campaign that makes it POE 2. All of the good stuff could just be called a big patch but when you add an entire new story path it is more than that. What it really is though is a big waste of time and effort. The campaign is the boring part of the game you are forced to play over and over again to get to the real game. I'd rather they go back to the days of diablo 1 and just have procedurally generated content instead of some super lame story.

POE2:
New campaign with 7 acts. Slower in general with multi phase bosses.
Reworked socket / link system. Skill gems now have links.
New ascendancies.

UI and graphical upgrades to character models and environment (act 1-10) will be incrementelly improved before POPE 4.0 (POE2) goes live.

3.9 Lioneyes watch was a first step into this direction and i expected them reworking the older player hubs like Forest/Sarn encampment in the next two mini expansions.

Plus they will very likely have more stuff they have yet to tell us.

Truth is if they hadn't incrementally improved the game it would look like a proper sequel. I think that there is a new storyline and some quite significant additions and changes is enough to call it POE 2 when you look at other games even in the same genre Borderlands and Van Helsing come to mind.

They explain at the show why they couldn't do a brand new game. Splitting the community and the catch up on content a sequel would need to make.

Big difference with those other games is that they are all fresh start. No items etc. carry over.

Imagine some new player starting out in POE 2 and then realizing that the BIS item for their build was crafted 6 years ago in 2014.

GGG should have made it a fresh start. Just carry over all purchases like stash tabs and cosmetics but no characters or items. Would also be a lot less effort for them too as now they need to port over millions of stash tabs and convert all items in them to the new socket system.

Lets go back to the earliest days of PoE. To some of us, when we joined, running "campaign" was the end game. Either running Fellshrine Runs (in the earliest days) or spamming "Piety runs" (a little later when we got A3) was thing we were doing. This was the game.
Now they give us entirely new campaign with entirely new crew of characters. Looking back, its like they made PoE again. Thats what makes it "POE 2"

Piety runs gave me that axe that made u not use any mana...back in the day
Such an OP item lol
