what makes PoE 2 be PoE 2?

calling it poe2 i agree that its just marketing. it makes more buzz. it makes more news. it generates more clicks, so i get it.
but i think its a bit of a deceptive title. it isn't another game, its the same game.

that being said, i highly support it being the same game. working with what they've already built with years of history, allowing you to keep your MTX, and many other reasons. it really feels like the best thing to do.
they could have actually worked to develop an entirely new game if they really wanted to money grab
they called it PoE 2 because Fortnite dared to call a big update Fortnite 2 and so did Overwatch and so maybe other multiplayer game.

monkey do what monkey see.

honestly Poe 2 sounds bad from an active poe player, but it sound like novelty to someone that left the game or didn't paid much attention to it.

if they called it PoE: (average uber expansion name) it wouldn't have the same novelty impact for someone who is not into PoE.

from what i've seen it's just PoE with different story but still same thing as current PoE with same engine and everything

- New character models and animations
- A graphical update to "everything", from the skills and characters, to the grass and environment.
- New skills, new ascendancy classes
- Total rework of the skill/socket system
- New lighting effects
- A complete, "separate" campaign
- SHAPESHIFTING!

Anyhow, I'm not the biggest fan of calling it "PoE 2", but it seems major enough to defend the name, I guess. From where I'm standing, it's a bigger "leap" forward than some other "sequels" we see in the video game industry.

that sounds quite nice indeed but i'm a bit concerned the graphical upgrades might be too big for an already unoptimized game
PoE2 will be quite different to the current game while levelling but once you hit maps it'll be the same as PoE1. Personally I don't think it should be called PoE2.

And that is a fair concern when it comes to PoE. I do have hope, though. Hope that the graphical updates and updates to the engine will help the optimization. Pipe dreams? Maybe.
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.
The title screen.

Seriously though, it's real title is Path of Exile: Exileder. You play an Exile who gets exiled from Wraeclast and the story is about the journey back to exile. Then when you finally return to Wraeclast you're in a shipwreck and wash ashore...

It is just a major addition with some enhancements to what we already have. Our characters and stashes filled with gear will remain so it is not a fresh/brand new game. A new game would be a full reset of everything.

However from a review/marketing perspective it sort of makes sense. When people watch reviews where reviewers compare POE to other games, they don't really know if they are referring to POE on release in 2013 or POE in 2020 which are vastly different games. Putting a new name on it will make it clear on what is being compared.

eg, POE 2020 or POE2 is probably better than Wolcen but POE 2013 is not.

I mean looking at act1 looks like a much more modernized game.

The only issue is end game performance is going to probably still kneecap the game from ever looking 'good'.

Check out my LA build: 1782214
POE2:
New campaign with 7 acts. Slower in general with multi phase bosses.
Reworked socket / link system. Skill gems now have links.
New ascendancies.

UI and graphical upgrades to character models and environment (act 1-10) will be incrementelly improved before POPE 4.0 (POE2) goes live.

3.9 Lioneyes watch was a first step into this direction and i expected them reworking the older player hubs like Forest/Sarn encampment in the next two mini expansions.
Masterpiece of 3.16 lore
"A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. She hands you a rusty-looking device called the Blood Crucible and urges you to implant it into your body."

Only usable with Ethanol Flasks

Plus they will very likely have more stuff they have yet to tell us.

Truth is if they hadn't incrementally improved the game it would look like a proper sequel. I think that there is a new storyline and some quite significant additions and changes is enough to call it POE 2 when you look at other games even in the same genre Borderlands and Van Helsing come to mind.

They explain at the show why they couldn't do a brand new game. Splitting the community and the catch up on content a sequel would need to make.
