Why Melee will always suck
The overarching problem melee faces in most games is a lack of utility because there's a limitation to what you can feasibly do until magic is involved.
So Melee skills often feel underpowered in most games let a lone poe, but because the skills aren't fluffy usually result in my numbers vs your numbers, which means at a certain gear point melees will stomp but until you get there you get your ass handed to you. Whether that point exists in POE is debatable but every game with a melee type character that is designed to Heavy Strike or Cleave or basically attack slightly different with their equiped weapon and armor will fall to the same problems. If you go down the route of D3 or other games that bake a -%damage reduction into the classes or skills you end up bringing an unstoppable force eventually with enough gear. I certainly find myself microing my character more as a melee then as a ranged, and you have to build with getting hit in mind (rather than just surviving a screw up and getting hit when you shouldnt have been). Because POE is very open you cant for example (if marauder was melee only) just give them 3x the armor of everyone else. You also can't limit armor types to certain classes, you couldn't limit an armor with damage reduction or dodge chance to Strength or Dex. You could apply the reduction to the gems them selves however, that mean's spare gem slots on ranged would be used for melee defence gems, if you made it apply when using the skill that doesn't help if you desync and end up in a bunch of mobs or right before you use the skill. You could use flasks (granite flasks, used to be 10k base not 4k) that worked but meant everyone could tank not just melee. tl;dr Ultimately you'll come to the conclusion, playing melee is like using Lightning arrow with Fork instead of Chain (ok but not optimal) IGN Nem:KrippsGardener Last edited by magiceffect#4518 on Mar 24, 2013, 11:20:52 PM

On my character Ranged Character I have the following Defensive Stats:
451 Armor 352 Evasion Rating 7% Fire Resist 28% Cold Resist 29% Lightning Resist -43% Chaos Resist 0% Life Leech 4.1 Life Recovery per second I can solo maps easily and seldom have to use pots. GG IGNs- Gyeff // Greff // Gyaff Last edited by geffreyy#5100 on Mar 25, 2013, 1:55:16 AM

Yeah ele dmg is so easy to get in comparison to phys.
I play as Ground Slam mara and I can solo any map except maybe for no mana regen for now since I have only 5L Marohi. But I just don't see further potential of the phys build, it can't get OP with any kind of gear as of now, I mean I can get 1-4, 7-12 phys dmg rings >.< .... rly GGG? 1-4 and 7-12? >.< While say ele cleaver can get 1-30 lightning gloves and that will boost him by 1k dps =) They surely tried hard to make it good, but as usualy fucked up big time with balance. They rly need to address the elephant in the game =) IGN: Seze Last edited by _Seze_#5968 on Mar 25, 2013, 3:45:17 AM

" They're doing it slowly, The phys vs Ele debate is mostly gear I agree IGN Nem:KrippsGardener

" Yeah Elemental Base mods are higher but consider that Str gives free % Physical Damage, and your weapon can have very high Phys Damage. Even so, I agree, Elemental Damage does outdamage Physical damage because you can get easier access to a wider array of resist penetrative effects. But, elemental Damage should always outdamage Physical because Physical damage has the incredible attribute of being able to Leech large amounts of Mana and Life. Elemental Damage can get a max of 8~9%? Life Leech and and 4~5%? Mana Leech by sacrificing a Gem slot for each. IGNs-

" Yeah. ele vs phys is gear bonuses. melee vs ranged is well...u know...it's FUBAR. Got rly frustrated lately with it and have put PoE on hold, went to my d3 WW barb, what an enjoyable experience, might even stay there. While also thinking of rolling an alt in PoE as EK mara or ele ranger, cause seriously the only reason to go melee in PoE as of now is if u wanna go bald before u even hit 25. IGN: Seze

" If you're a tank, get armor. Besides capped resistances go for life. Get life leech. It is true that ranged is not as tough in terms of gear as melee but melee can still be viable. The only boss which can't be killed IMHO on maps is the giant Spark totem with increased crit chance. Thats about it. -- a "true" melee. IGN DolandDoesGooby

" Elemental Damage can mostly profit from physical Damage, either in converted damage or Iron Will. And for Life/Mana Leech the gems are more then enough for survivíng, since you deal high damage and will reach the Leech cap anyways. The Range vs Melee imbalance is easy to fix.
You just have to change the passiv-skills in a way that +dmg with swords, and any similar melee-passiv-skills, award a small amount of dmg reduction. e.g. old: +8 melee dmg; new: +8 melee dmg and 0.2% dmg reduction ofc u have to nerf lightning strike; e.g. reduced range or build in "point blank" |

" This wont be a fix, elemental melee builds dont take physical melee damage nodes, so they cant get DR then if they add it those nodes, they have to add a passive or keystone in the middle or somewhere that reduces global damage while wielding melee weapons and also makes spells do 0 damage so it cant be abused by casters or ranged builds. It will be a passive necessary for any melee build, its not elegant, but its a fix, thats what we need.
