Mirrors and scam: Add a mirror service in town

Scamming is wrong in real life because people can lose everything(=die, REAL DEATH, not delete account) , it's not wrong in a video game where most of what they can lose is pixels and time (time they chose to spend playing, wasted by their misplaced trust).

Just another case of not undestanding the relative nature of all human relations. You think some ways of spending time are better than others and therefore that you should not respect certain ways of spending time.

Maybe your common sense is different than mine, or maybe you're just impaired in some way (like many in the usa that think fast food should be outlawed because they weigh 400 punds).

Nice strawman bro, come again.

I'm done coming at you. Just tell you this: try to change your idea because as they are they SUCK.
Are you afraid to lose potential scams or what has you worried such?

what the fuck kind of game designer has scamming as an intended part of their games ecosystem.

(also, people who think that just because it is virtual currency it is worthless are the dumbest fucktards ive ever seen)

Lets not talk about value now. Why is gold worth so much, it's just a metal that sits in vaults?
Worth is decided by the "market" and by every partecipant of it in unequal shares.

The point here is that scam regulations can be different from real life because you can only lose pixels(which you can value something), you can never lose something real and life or livelihood threatening.
Verily, the man cried out unto GGG, "This world is filled with scammers! Save me!"

GGG looked down upon the man, and replied, "Save thyself."

Just curious... if the default setting is "Scam & steal" who is ever going to trade with someone they don't know really, really well?

Fine, if that's the aim of the developers. Trade will get limited, mirrors more so. Can't say I'll ever trade with most of the names on this forum, regardless of what they might claim to offer.

Of course, it's another argument for belonging to (and only trading with) a solid game-independent guild.

I understand this is a role playing game, but I don't think the best role to play should be shopkeeper. - AlteraxPoe
If this sort of thing is really concerning, for the time being I would suggest trying to use a middleman. In future, this sort of role would likely be handled by prominent guild leaders or other people with good standing in the community and a reputation to uphold. At the moment there aren't guilds officially structured in-game though, so this isn't really a thing.

You might be able to make popular topics, Crackmonster, but you kinda suck at keeping them on-topic.

I get your original point, and here's where people are missing it left, right and center: this isn't about trading. It's about GIVING.

Because when you want something mirrored that doesn't belong to you, you're not trading. You're handing over, with no intention of actual 'trade', your most valuable item. A Mirror of freakin' Kalandra. You're expecting the other person to use that item (which is no longer yours once it's in their inventory) to duplicate one of their items and then GIVING that duplicate to you. It's not even giving it back, because it didn't exist until you sacrificed your Mirror to create it.

That's a hell of a lot of trust. Totally. And I would not be against a mirroring 'service', either player-run or whatever, that has safeguards against what would easily be perceived as theft *but is not* -- if the person taking the mirror keeps it.

Let me iterate: that is not theft. It is not them taking it against your will. They didn't reach into your inventory and pluck the mirror out. You handed it over based on trust.

Is it scamming? Absolutely. 100%. And this is where scamming and theft are different. Scamming is fraudulent betrayal of gained confidence; theft is just taking shit against someone's will.

Note again that this really has nothing to do with trade.

Now does GGG condone scamming? Of course not. But here's something a lot of people seem not to have considered:

Perhaps they implemented the Mirror of Kalandra to be used by one's self with one's own gear.

To do what folks are doing now (my mirror, your uber gear, I want a copy) is sort of a short-cut to glory. And I think short-cuts should always have their pitfalls.

Trusting someone with your mirror is a hell of a pitfall.

It really is completely unfair to say that GGG condones scamming because they don't have safeguards against people just keeping your Mirror when you *handed it over*. It's your Mirror. Do with it what you will. There is no law or rule stating that the Mirror was designed to dupe other people's stuff, and if you want to do that, there will be issues.

The Mirror of Kalandra process demands that both the item being duplicated and the Mirror itself is in your possession.

Your possession.

Think about that.

If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period.
