Chris says 4.0 will take on Diablo 4

Diablo 3 and Diablo 2 looked already outdated when they were released so your statement doesn't make much sense.

Not sure exactly what you mean. This was a statement from Chris about next generation competition. PoE is fairly old, the truth isnt an insult.

Clearly games being released in the next few years will be ahead of PoE from a functional standpoint. I think that's a fairly easy assessment to make.

It will depend on Diablo 4's loot system. If they can figure out how to do anything besides sets/bonuses that is..
If blizzard is makeing diablo 4 right now i wouldn't fear for poe. Blizzards recent track record tells me they are no real threat.

They even were spiteful towards David Breivik. They (not all not all but most)
have no respect for their own legacy. Another example of that is how they said you wouldn't want to go back to classic. Now they basically had to do it because of pressure from the community over years. Classic will be more successful than retail, mark my words.

It seems the industy is filled with hipsters with degrees (watchdogs comes to mind immediately, team must have consisted of hipsters only) instead of hardcore gamers that dropped out of college and went of to prove themselves to the world.

Seeing how popular the new season was on Twitch, they need to worry about competing against D3 first. There are still a lot of people who play that game, surprisingly enough.

But, this is a PoE forum where, like all gamers, they believe in out-of-sight, out-of-mind. If they dont play it, it must be dying or dead. Ex-WoW players fall into this trap every single expansion while they still have 10 million subs.

They don't want to report the numbers anymore. It is estimated that at the moment roughly 1.5 million people are subscribed to world of warcraft.
10 million was 10 years ago my man.

Blizzard and most AAA developers make their money by selling highly polished looking games with top notch graphics. The end result is the gameplay is dog shit.

Poe's gameplay is dog shit too. To a comical degree... see all the threads on the subject if you live under a rock.

Poe's success relied entirely on Diablo3 insuccess.
Perhaps they have builth a large enough following of no lifers to survive in the event of successful Diablo IV.

Let's not kid ourselves even a Diablo II remastered would shake up POE.

The lowest estimates I've seen are still over 2 million, and likely to see a bump with classic.

Still all in all 2 million subscribers is a fuckton for a game well over a decade old.

When they release a new expansion, they get those subs back for months; even longer. Its not permanent, but that would be like saying path of exile had league release numbers 2 months into the league. Path of exile has like 13k people playing on Steam; would you say Path of Exile is dying? Or do you think that will shoot back up to something healthy?

You know what I meant. Just googling Legion it says that release boosted subs to 10.1 million. That was just 1 expac ago; not 10 years. Even shitty WoD brought back 10 million subs at release.

Yes, it has its peaks and valleys just like PoE, just like any game. But when a new xpac drops, numbers rise back up. The game isn't dying. It seems theres a good 10 million people who pay 50 bucks for a new xpac and 3-6 months every single time. I think Blizzard is happy with that.

At this moment in time D3 is actually in a better place than PoE. Never thought I'd actually say that but it's the truth. The new season is fucking light years better than Synthesis.

PoE was built upon the framework that was created by diablo 2. Other games followed suit and mostly copied diablo 2.

PoE didn't.

The only thing ARPG about PoE is simply top down loot RPG, otherwise it's as far away from Diablo as you can get. It has grown the ARPG genre into something different entirely, I would go so far as to add sandbox to the game's tag.

A character progression and customization system that promotes incredible and literally endless customization which also works together with their endless skill customization. Then you have item crafting, which no other ARPG has, and a near endless unique end-game (diablo 3 endgame is identical to PoE in this regard, but at least you can choose the direction of play with PoE's engame)

The only thing holding this game back is a strong new player guide that is in-game with plenty of help and tooltips... a graphical update... and advertisement.
