Jim, melee was ALWAYS viable. One just needs to understand the mechanics of the class, the mobs, boss etc... I had/have melee classes and have had no issues. You just need to be creative.

Then let's not use the word melee. We're not saying that "all builds that use melee weapons suck", since there's previously obviously been successful Ground Slam and Lightning Strike builds (and also Cleave, but this thread has brought it to the forefront again).

What we're talking about is skill range. Skills with the same range as the melee weapon you use with are extremely dangerous to use right now, and just because a skill that uses a melee weapon that has much higher range works we shouldn't generalize and say that builds that use melee weapons are viable.

The thing is, there are two ways this can go. Either every melee-weapon build ends up using these not-actually-melee-range builds, and GGG calls the case closed, or they actually make changes so that there are more viable melee-weapon AoE skills that require you to be right up there taking and dishing out melee damage. I (and others here) feel that the latter is what's needed for ideal melee gameplay.

I'm merely saying that if you were to rely on RNG for one of your main gems in a race, at that moment you would be an idiot. :)

Also yes they do, but those aren't main gems, while increased AoE is very much a big part of Nugi's build.

I would have to agree. Nobody in any type of serious competition relies on RNG or providence in RL. You just would not get far period. And we probably would have to define the parameters of what is considered: "If you count on drops for your main stuff." What if he finds only "whites?" What if he doesn't find any orbs whatsoever? Yes, RNG can be a bitch at times ;) Who is this person? Can his word be trusted as such? Valid claims I think after all, look what happened with Lance Armstrong...

Hitting someone at ground slam range is not melee. The BASE skill of cleave is in melee range, what he was using is not.
