please end mystery boxes (loot boxes, glorified gambling)

I get what you're saying and sure, but I don't see how blocking yourself from a part of the store is fixing anything. Sure, you wouldn't be able to buy boxes anymore, but they'd still be there and everyone else would buy them, potentially getting items you'd have to wait 4 months for now.

I don't think at all that something like you're suggesting would work out for anyone. It's far simpler for all parties involved, including the business that is GGG, to ditch the boxes and release their content in the store. It's always high quality MTX that many folks would like to have, so maybe to boost sales, give them some initial discount or something. They do the "same" with boxes anyway.

You could argue that the boxes net more revenue, because some people, like me, will spend way too much on them and end up paying MORE than store price for their sets in the end, but by far the majority of people I've spoken to do not do this at all and actually potentially cost GGG money.

Only GGG would know these exact numbers though, but they've never tried the non-box approach, so they'd have nothing to compare it to.
Carry on my waypoint son, there'll be peace when maps are done.

This a GGG product that gives you AT LEAST your points value per box, with a set, clearly stated chance for MUCH higher rewards. Essentially, they are a random sale. Heavy discounts at the cost of getting random things. Is that okay? Well, that's up to you to decide, isn't it?

I did not think about mentioning that, but they do seem like good deals indeed and I think that they are.

I did not know that it was a thing, but as tylo19 said, if GGG is fine with blocking the options for those who reckognized that they have a problem with the boxes, then there is really not much more to say imho.

I'd feel terrible if I was blocked from any content, even if it's cosmetics in a store. I'd never request such a thing, despite knowing I have a "problem" in regards to boxes.

Heck, the greatest part of the enjoyment and philosophy of an ARPG is gambling to me. Look at currency, chaos orbs, exalts, any kind of drops, it's all random upon random upon random, and we love it! Even 6 years in now, I'm not bored, I'm still playing BECAUSE of this randomness. It has potentially endless replay value because no build you make will ever truly be the same, but each has the potential to become the greatest build you've ever done. A dreamer's dream.

Don't most of us play for that chance to get that Shavs, to get that exalt, to get that mirror that could be right around the corner on your next map? That potential to upgrade your gear, or brick it with a vaal orb, that 6 link bow or armor... THAT'S what keeps us going in games like these. Mystery boxes somewhat follow the same philosophy.

It may be weakness on my part, but I'd feel "incomplete" if I was blocked from anything regarding Path of Exile, no matter how small, and it would probably completely eliminate my will to play as it would feel like the full potential of my account/experience will be impossible to meet and that's a killer to me.

Like I said, sunk cost fallacy. I'm in all the way, or I'm out.

i get what you are saying and i think most ppl understand it as well. however its not the job of GGG to prevent ppl from "gambling" with boxes.
tehre job is,to help you not to do stupid things when you tell them about your problem (blocking you from buying).

this might sound harsh, but that is simply how the world works and there is no way around it.

you can say the same about every addiction that exist from "food" (sry i simply dont know the right word here,i mean stuff like fast food and/or very sweet/tasty things that really make you want to buy it again) over gambling to drugs (talking about legal ones here like alcohol, cigarettes etc) is bad for ppl if they dont control it properly.

you arent telling every supermarket or company that produces one of these or "mcdonalds/burger king etc" to not sell their stuff, because tehre are some ppl out there that missuse their stuff right?

gambling might seem different than those, but it actually isnt. any kind of real addiction ruins your healt and finances,if you dont get help.

yes,it might be easier to get addicted to gambling and that is a good reason to have strict laws for it. but it is absolutely no reason to not allow it at all.
I'm all for personal responsibility. Those who spend more money than they can afford to gamble for MTXs are 100% responsible for their mistakes.

On the other hand, I'm all for personal responsibility. Those who seek to exploit the gambling weaknesses of others in order to make a profit are also 100% responsible for their mistakes.

Looks like we have two parties at fault here, folks.

as long as the gambling "provider" offers help in a reasonable way (i.e. online casinos are forced to give you a pop up warning after you spent x time gambling and a block option that makes you unable to gamble on their set as soon as its known to them that you are addictaed)

imO they fulfill that responsability as soon as those conditions are met.

But if GGG ditches the boxes then you are hurting all the people who buy a reasonable amount of them by making them spend more to get these mtx.

You don't have to go gambling in the casino

You really don't, which is why it's fine.

Tell that to gambling addicted people.

Its quite clear who is being abused in this case.

You are using real money to buy these boxes which in fact makes it real money gambling and you are getting something for it i.e. dresses for your ingame dolls.
Need more brains, exile?
Yeah, I hope they would remove lootboxes but I know they wont because GGG (+Tencent) probably make a majority of their revenue by selling lootboxes to gambling-addicted whales. There is a reason why EA and many other publishers have been trying to inject lootboxes in their games: they make lots of money by preying on addicts! This is predatory as hell but they still keep doing it, Im disappointed in the GGG...

I don't agree that what GGG is doing is the same as a company like EA though. GGG is doing it in as fair a way as possible. It's still random regardless, that much remains true, but there are no losers apart from those who take it too far.

We're responsible for our own money in the end. I could blow it all on the store too, or on supporter packs or whatever else. They'd have to block all of it. And no offense, but who is GGG to decide for someone what is or isn't responsible in their real life situation? For all they know I could be loaded and even thousands of dollars aren't a big deal to me.

I don't think, unless someone specifically requests something like this, GGG should ever interfere, unless some rule is broken. If there's anything I've learned from experience, it's that to truly help someone with an issue, you have to let them come to you, because them acknowledging the problem is the first step towards a solution. If you force it, they might just shield up and deflect your claims.

All in all, I'm not unhappy personally. I know my flaws and I deal with them accordingly. The most important thing to me, is that I do it.
