This game's curve is seriously out of whack...

So tell me. Am I MISSING something?

I have ~600 health with ~900 Energy Shield

Need a lot more life, and a way to sustain that life other than flasks. The energy shield is useless if you are melee and without a way to replenish es in combat. So you are basically doing cruel act3 with 600 hp, which is ludicrous.

Edit: Upon seeing your second post, I see that you are woefully undergeared and your build is poorly planned. Your heart might be in the right place as far as the build goes at end game, but you need to pick your passives more wisely getting to that point.
Upgrades to your gear would not cost you anywhere near an exalted per piece. I've vendored things that are big upgrades for you. I'd give you a bunch of upgrades for free were you in HC.

Hmm, a Lightning Strike crit build? I'd probably try and find a one-hander with better physical damage. You might consider swapping Critical Weakness for Temporal Chains. While you won't deal as many crits, you already have a good chance to shock without critting. Temporal chains will make the shock last 50% longer as well as increase your survivability by slowing down the enemies.

I had a build all made up, but then I forgot that you were going CI. I'm having a hard time coming up with a good build that includes CI. *time passes* Okay, I guess I'd go with something like this with your current amount of points:

http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgYA3ncsRjy9UEKMNhOepJF_xhzcwcXsGMNtoqPB849G0NCboWe97m8dFPrSZp6plXB9T32AVlFg99esmBSwOjA5Urw3Tm1YBwD9F1BMLYIeLUenCLiTTDXjgucLKMXzvt6wEds4G20ZO-Hi96cri3ozdpI4kc_kEQ==

ending up with something like this:

http://www.pathofexile.com/passive-skill-tree/AAAAAgYA3ncsRjy9UEKMNhOepJF_xhzcwcXsGMNtoqPB849G0NCboWe97m8dFPrSZp6plXB9T32AVlFg99esmBSwOjA5Urw3Tm1YBwD9F1BMLYIeLUenCLiTTDXjgucLKMXzvt6wEds4G20ZO-Hi96cri3ozdpI4kc_kEevuhEg8jgFvV8k0CpMnN2YspqbrN4Pquiy_9OkMfRB_xp4aMnFNms9DY7cxWPWdxA==

Still quite iffy. And being CI, you can expect to take status effects from every hit and stuns from hits 50% of the time because of the way the game calculates how status effects are inflicted. A thread about that.

You have ONE life node. Unfortunately the state of the game is you are absolutely obligated to stack life to survive.

Thread title may be misleading, but he's actually looking for help, which is somewhat refreshing.

As stated before, you need about double your current life pool. Use the passive tree for build mechanic keystones, and then stack survivability. You can derive your damage from a good weapon and skill/gem synergies.

As melee, your life pool is just a buffer that should be constantly being refilled via leech. The amount of life that leech can regen per second is capped based on your maximum health, so again, getting more health will make leech more effective.
Too low HP/ES to facetank in act 3, even in cruel.

I'm good in act 3 once I get inside the temple, but the barracks can be ruff if you run into a mob of 4-6 lightning mages using arc.

W/ your HP, you need some kind of crowd control like minions or traps unless you got a really good AOE melee skill like cleave or sweep and can take them out in 3 hits before they're in your face telling you a story.

In D2, the confuse curse would be perfect. Keep them off you and chop them up.

i posted this to help another one but it may help you tp get an idea about needed defense bonus.

"
look my defenses with my new build @ level 80 i deleted all attack boni. AR/EV hybrid (duelist)

+212 to Strength
+212 to Dexterity
+104 to Intelligence
+408 to maximum Mana
+642 to maximum Life
Evasion Rating: 290
5% Additional Elemental Resistance per Endurance Charge
+5 Maximum Frenzy Charge +1 from quest = 6 = 6x4% more EV
180% increased maximum Life
102% increased Armour
40% increased Evasion Rating and Armour
Ignore all Movement Penalties from Armour
18% increased Frenzy Charge Duration
92.4% increased Evasion Rating
+15% to all Elemental Resistances
2% of Physical Attack Damage Leeched back as Life
Enemies Cannot Leech Life From You
Doubles chance to Evade Projectile Attacks (i can go AFK vs ranged mobs)
4% increased Evasion Rating per Frenzy Charge
+20.8% Energy Shield

thats a lot EV/AR 150% each with options left to go even higher. i have all the AR/EV Bonus right now with level 63, so i can judge about this.

also, you dont need a lot of DPS nodes in your build. focus more on surviving, the dps comes from alone with a good weapon! :)

this is my defense with my lev 78 shadow LA ranger which is a EV/ES hybrid

+134 to Strength
+362 to Dexterity
+122 to Intelligence
+417 to maximum Mana
+611 to maximum Life
Evasion Rating: 290
+6 Maximum Frenzy Charge
5% Additional Elemental Resistance per Endurance Charge
114% increased maximum Life (haha :D way too low but a slong as nobody reaches you, its fine)
36% increased Frenzy Charge Duration
228.4% increased Evasion Rating
86% increased maximum Energy Shield
20% increased Energy Shield Cooldown Recovery
+20% to all Elemental Resistances
4% increased Evasion Rating per Frenzy Charge
Doubles chance to Evade Projectile Attacks
+24.4% Energy Shield

good luck with mastering this learing cliff in this game ;) just make a few chars and reroll if they suck. every new char is more fun because YOU start to dominate the game and not otherwise.

OP: To be quite honest, you should leave that character where he's at until you get a full respec some time in the future from the skill tree being reworked. You simply didn't take enough +Life to survive.

Try this guide and build, it will help you understand what's needed:
http://www.exilepro.com/builds/shadow/493-shadow-freeze-pulse-tank/build

You have zero life nodes around your skill tree. That's why you're so squishy, and, I believe energy shield is not that useful, and I don't think it's even useful when you're actually melee. (Sorry if I'm wrong about the energy shield part)

But, yeah, you have zero life nodes.
