Ted Cruz was born in Canada, but he was still electable to be president because his mother was born in the US right? Even if Obama was born in another country, wasn't his mother Kansan? That was the only part of the birther thing that I didn't fully understand

I thought Cruz was ineligible and running for the lulz.

The qualifications for president of the United States are citizen by birth, not by birth place, so as long as someone has one parent who was a citizen, or if they were born on US Soil or US territory/property, they are eligible. As for who is a citizen in general - anyone who goes through the proper legal steps - including those who may not have followed the legal steps initially.

This could be why the 'birther' thing is still such a big deal.

For a few crackpots, it might be. The idea that a president would forge something like this (which there would be no need to) would be the issue of interest here.
