How to become rich in Path of Exile?

About flipping - you need initial currencie to start it. And unless you got lucky with good item, I doubt you will get a lot fast. People are aware of woops and correctly pricing their items today. Unless ofcourse you have exquisite knowledge of non-straightforward rare items worth like crit, wed, rarity shenanings without Life + Res.

I have Woops setup for good rare accessories and jewels as well. I can't care less to price them correctly though, so 3 stats jewels are kept for 40c and nobody buys them.

Problem with flipping is that when you don't have a lot of currencie and want certain item for yourself actually, bunch of people who already have trillion mirrors buy them faster just to get even more wealth and make you salty.

Just playing a lot goes a long way too. I would imagine people who play 10-12 hours a day are, by sheer brute force, going to have several times the wealth of a person who plays less. I say this as someone who played such hours first 2 weeks.. and it has paid off (see spoiler). The down side is now i feel kinda burned out.

Spoiler

Noway you gained this much currencie just by playing a lot. :o What content you played? What's your build? What services you done for people? What was your trades? Did you RMT'ed in the begining to get boost? Was you in group? Etc. etc.

Sure, just playing a lot of hours isn't enough to make you rich. Playing a lot of hours doing the right things, knowing what sells, and how to get it... You can play for 12 hours a day and not make any cash, if you are doing the wrong things with that 12 hours..

And details are?...

Here was my strat: Do tons of prophecies. Sell everything I get for chaos (I very rarely seal any prophecy) and buy more coins. People will pay 2c for lifesprig, goldrim and wanderlust early on (these are probably vendor trash by now). Kintsugi I think I sold for 40-50c the first few times I got it. There are tons of medium sized payoffs (Belly of the Beast, Tabula Rasa). Even fated uniques go for a decent amount early on.

Reach of the Council from the Pale Court is probably the most reliable payoff. You WILL get the keys. You can't count on say, the Voidheart prophecy or guaranteed six-link (extremely rare). But that bow is a 1/4 drop chance, and its worth 6-7 exalts.

But it's not begining of the League now. Prophecie flipping is less profitable in current meta, because of coin price. They are fucking expensive (3 coins for 1 chaos, as opposed to 6:1 and better ratios during previous Leagues). And it's boring af.

Play the game. Sell your items. Keep playing.

You won't get wealth, unless you know what you are doing. And I am talking wealth here - enough currencie to buy a Headhunter and fund your build with GG gear.

Part 2 incomming

No offense dude but you're just not on my level (and i'm not even top tier). While I was top 100 ladder for the entire first week, you were still saving Clarissa. Between selling red maps for 10-30c a pop and buying up exalts at 40-50c each, getting 5 BOTB's to drop/prophecy, 3 binos, 2 devotos, from the void, a couple of tabulas, etc. I then did a humongous flip by picking up a cospris will for 1.5ex, 6L'd it in 50 fuse and sold for 10ex. All said, I was able to buy 'the doctor' cards at 5ex each very early on. The entropy fletch bow was a complete fluke (500 alts and 1 regal, like lol..)

Keep in mind, I am small potatoes compared to many big power players/guilds. I can assure you there are players/guilds with hundreds, if not thousands, of exalts worth of gear/currency already.

edit: also, no I didnt play CI or bladeflurry (as some suggested would be the smart thing to do) in fact if you play a non-meta life build-- for example i started as a bow slayer, so all of my gear was cheap and i was very effective at boss killing--which allowed me to sell the 'meta' gear without detriment to myself.

All you have to do it play.

I've been playing since 2012 and have never found an insane GG item but anything I have ever needed for a character I have been able to get by just playing the game.

You can do things to speed it up if you really want to (flip, scam, price fix) and lots of people do, but just enjoy the game, sell what you find and it'll happen.

I get better drops on my witch than I do on my marauder. Coincidence? I think not
Why is everyone so butt hurt about Mathill, are they jealous over his career, looks, his knowledge of the game?

The two basic ways are -

1. Play a meta build. play a lot. early and often. get to the top 1% of pack and sell stuff you find. You will find the best stuff. First at high maps which drops better stuff. Then the boss kills which yield high end items - uber atziri, guardians, shaper, breach lords. These guys play 14-16 hrs days at start of league and are effective with thier time. Like 4-5 hrs to maps.

2. Don't play "the game" much at all. Buy low sell high like any good capitalistic. Even easier today with the woop system peo.trade has implemented. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VuHHSSThdGY

You have to decide if you want to spend a lot of time in game flipping or playing. If you decide to play, as has already been said, get a good build that can clear most if not all content and you will find stuff you don't need and can sell.
Censored.
I think a lot of the time the people that complain about flipping don't understand how to do it...You don't have to spend hours on end to make a decent amount flipping items and you don't need a lot of currency either..I flipped items on D3 up until the rmah/ah shut down...IK chests, manticores and rings...Take 15 minutes out of your day either before playing or after playing..Concentrate on one or two items that people want and make sure to have the right prefixes and suffixes...Poe.trade makes this even easier to do setting up woops and have them running while you play...Buying low and selling high is part of it, but so is supply and demand..Selling items at one and two chaos adds up rather quickly..Then you can move on to more expensive items..
