I would actually advice not to get rich in this game. I tried. Got myself a heck of a facebreaker/frenzy build in the past. It was around 40ex worth of gear. Few months later it was worth 10 ex because of balance changes. Had also a legacy Mjolner discharge build. You know what happend to legacy Mjolner.
Maybe if you get to the mirrored gear but even then you sometimes get rekt by the balance changes. I remember a certain popular dagger for example. Headhunter? It could be the one on the next big patch.
It really hurts when you invest precious time into a game for absolutely nothing. I really don't understand GGG that they destroy the time investments of their players this easy.
My strategy is to just enjoy the temp league and when I get bored I stop playing POE. This way I avoid those moments when you get sort of stuck and depressed and feel more like a grind machine.

My strategy to avoid this is using builds that won't get nerfed, simply because they are too... weird? Let's go with weird. I usually try to use currently unpopular stuff and most of the time it actually turns out rather well. For my tastes at least, but that's good enough for me.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

It's a sound poe.trade makes when item you set notification for appears on the Market.

You need quite a lot of currencie to roll CI character. At least at this point of the League it's not that cheap.
And just mindlessly farming won't yield much. You need to know what you are doing.

Just playing a lot goes a long way too. I would imagine people who play 10-12 hours a day are, by sheer brute force, going to have several times the wealth of a person who plays less. I say this as someone who played such hours first 2 weeks.. and it has paid off (see spoiler). The down side is now i feel kinda burned out.
Noway you gained this much currencie just by playing a lot. :o What content you played? What's your build? What services you done for people? What was your trades? Did you RMT'ed in the begining to get boost? Was you in group? Etc. etc.
Aside from Headhunter, nothing there is outrageous. RotC is easy enough to get by spamming Pale Court runs. My character has dropped 3 natural exalts this league. (Yes, that's probably on the high side, but not unheard of). 300 Chaos is nothing while selling off random stuff and keeping a chaos recipe stash tab. Multi-crafted Harb is easy enough to hit with enough Alts spammed as well.
Naturally a lot of currency gain is based on luck, especially if you're selling self-found drops, but with enough pulls of the slot, you're bound to find a few things worth some currency.

Play temp leagues, not Dumpster league. Then you never have to worry about this.

None of the "get rich" options in PoE appeal to me. But as others mentioned, there's really only two paths with a whole bunch of gray in-between it all...
- Flip items. Play the market, buy low, sell high, corner the market on specific items. Since there is no AH or automatic trading functionality, this requires you to be online most of the time.
- Farm. Grind for specific items that sell well. Again, a lot of time investment, not only in time online but in repeating the same content over and over again until your eyes bleed. Most people make their big earnings in temporary leagues if they can grind faster and longer than most others (sounds pornographic, I know).

Play LOTS. Watch streams and spring on items that are about to be meta, stockpile, sell, profit.
