If Blizzard doesn't think it's cost effective to make a linux version of Diablo 3, what makes you think it makes fiscal sense for GGG to do it?

Blizzard doesn't think it's cost effective to make a decent game. If anything, they are literally living off of WoW and everything that has come out after it has been sub par for a reason. Have you wondered why so many indie game companies do in fact provide a Linux release to their games? Street Fighter V is still on its way to Linux (delays thanks to Volvo), the new Shadow Warrior games, Star Citizen has been promised a Linux release, Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Witcher III, the list goes on. Rocket League, is just the last among the series of games that have made it to Linux already. If predictions are accurate, DooM 4 is on its way to Linux thanks to Feral Interactive, which along side Aspyr Media ports games to Linux and Macintosh. Even competitors to this game such as Torchlight 2 and Victor Vran are on Linux. There is no person that can validly claim that there is no business case for Linux, because the companies that have taken up this platform have already broken even.
Crap game or not, if Blizzard could make a buck doing something, they would. Nobody chooses less profit over more profit.
That's kind of like saying "no one chooses a suboptimal build." First and foremost, optimal isn't always obvious. There is a strong tendency to stick to things which are known to work okay, when greatness may be possible.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

Multibillion dollar companies do exactly that from time to time. There's one that generates over a hundred billion dollars annually in revenue that could make a lot more money by doing things differently, but intentionally chooses not to. According to an interview with one of their founders, part of the reason for their long term success is not trying to make every single dollar in profit that they can.

"Cost-Effective" is an entirely different beast when your company is small, or has just enough people to maintain slow steady growth. Projects that take away too much of your employee's time can cause a devastating effect on the rest of the business. Although - they *might* pay off well in the long run, the uncertainty and the chaos and very real interim profit loss is often a project killer.

Choosing a suboptimal build in a game is not the same as an entity whose sole function is making money choosing to make less money. That's a silly comparison. And the premise here is that making a linux version will make more money. Not that making a linux version has a chance to make more money. There's a difference between choosing to make more profit and gambling to make more profit. Profit is income minus cost. That cost isn't always direct expenses. That cost could be PR and future lost sales. I don't know what company you're talking about DalaiLama or what exact words that founder said, but that makes no sense taken exactly as you wrote it. What makes sense is that you left out the part where there is a price for "making every single dollar in profit that they can". Like bad PR or loss of employees. Your quote sounds like what somebody might say with "quarterly" added to it but not something somebody would say for long term.

Especially in hardcore, what you do with your character is an investment. You play your character to get profit out of that investment. (Like, better gear, more levels, more currency). Choosing a sub optimal build therefore is very comparable to a companies method of invesment, eventhough the effects and intended goals are different. The explanation that has been put up definitely makes sense to anyone actually in a business. I work for a small company, we're forced to weigh desires vs profits all the time.

We don't have all that much time for research and development for example, eventhough that is one of the things to keep us ahead of our competitors. Yet if we don't make enough profit, we cannot do anything at all as the company would go bankrupt. So there's a balancing act there with little leeway. Blizzard on the other hand has an R&D department, just like Valve and the other big corporations. They are not maximizing their profits because they have these departments yet in the long run these departments will keep them alive.

The Linux case for Blizzard has been a little odd for those that keep track. They do/did have a WoW Linux client but never bothered to polish it up and release it to see what they could get out of this. Blizzard, among some others, have a belief (as in not substantiated with facts) that porting to Linux is bad for business. And when they communicated directly to the Linux gaming community about this it looked something kind of like this:

So for you to bring it up as an argument in a 'plz port this game to Linux' discussion is simply invalid as Blizzard bases its behavior on belief rather than reason.

Would you like some NaCl with that?
As we speak, there's a spambot in global 3 and it's not getting banned.

The (Dev) chat tag is there for all staff, including members of Support.

So now that I've been muted by you directly because there was a spambot that intervened in a dominus fight.

Chris: are you reading this? Can you please fire both GMs (Gary and the other guy) and spend your money on better resources? These guys are not combating spammers and instead are allowing them to do whatever the fuck they want. But if a player acts upon it because he is forced to, he gets muted. This shit is just impossible to play with.

You do realise that if all the mods are taking the same action, then they'll be doing what they have been instructed to to do?
