Great example of why free loot leagues need to go and the impact of Perandus.
oh and this is why Perandus was an awful league. it gave precedent of just handing out shit to you in every zone, by a NPC, in every map AS YOU DO YOUR EFFICIENT SHIT
and of course, GGG doesnt like to take away toys from kindergartners anymore so...next league will be ultra-'rewarding', bet it. |

" Totally agree with you. But there are many prophecies that doesn't spawn in maps: maps is still the central endgame. And this causes the people to ignore those prophecies. I mean, look at brutus+kole on prison: everyone will trigger it, and then leave the area; if that prophecy could trigger in a map the people wouldn't skip it, coz there would be 2 unique monsters that could drop good. Also. Fated prophecy unique are a pain in the ass. They should do something to make those prophecies not spawn so often. Overall the idea is good. Unemployed people should spend their time looking for an IRL job instead of 'working' in video games.

It seems unlikely we will get any more leagues that are simply harder than the main game with no additional rewards. However, there is room to tinker with the risk/reward dynamic such that leagues are harder than the main game while also being more rewarding. Anarchy and more recently Tempest are examples of how to do this right IMO. On the other hand I'm already bored with prophecies since most of them are low-risk, low-reward. And tedious as hell.
Yes PoE will always be repetitive to some degree but that's why challenge leagues are there: to spice things up. I strongly disagree that challenge leagues should derive their "challenge" from making the game more grindy. Better to make it less grindy while also making it more dangerous. That way, you kill two birds with one stone, since new ways of getting loot tends to entice casual players while new challenges tend to entice hardcore ones. Catering to the entirety of the player base is especially important now that Standard and Hardcore challenge leagues have been unified. Honestly Perandus would have done a fine job of this if the chest guardians were a bit more challenging (meaning dangerous, not just stupidly tanky). I dont know how the reddit thread you reference is related to Perandus - Prophecy is just badly designed which the reddit post expresses.
I am lvl 84 and get that prophecy : You will defeat Fidelitas while wielding Storm Cloud Now I can buy a Storm Cloud and go to a lvl 61 area and kill Fidelitas and vendor the upgraded bow ( since the prophecy to vendor 5 trash uniques for an other trash unique is too rare to cover the flood of trash uniques ) or have to seal the prophecy and destroy it. How hard would it have been to make prophecies be deletable for 1 coin ( Heck - one could even get a dark prophecy when he dismisses a certain amount of prophecies, that would have been fun posibly ). How hard would it have been to make unique item prophecies / prophecy chains unique ( only once per character / player ). Who the heck at GGG thought that lvl 80+ players would enjoy having to go back to lvl 60 and lower zones for some trash uniques repeatetly. Or having to go back to Act 4 town after almost every map... Clearly this league was rushed and its quality suffered heavily. The concept was nice though. I have a feeling GGG has to rethink its schedules. ( If there werent MTX to acquire I would have stopped playing this league after 1 day to be honest - just because the league is so annoying - and despite the fact that there are dozens of normally expensive uniques freely available - quality > loot ) When Chuck Norris plays PoE masters do his missions Last edited by AdFinitum#3969 on Jun 9, 2016, 5:38:12 PM

"Its the balancing point. You dont have to do it, you can seal it and move on, or you can do it an move on. The reason why Perandus was a failure and GGG acknowledged that it was a failure in the sense that the league was graciously over generous with its loot, is that there wasnt ANY form of balancing point. You save coins, you reset zones, you get more coins and you farm for cadiro deals. People had T1's and league only items day one, including multiple day one Headhunters. This league is essentially a second iteration of Perandus League, fixing everything wrong with Perandus League, which was the stupid amount of free loot with zero risk and investment. Also, LOL. 1 Coin for deleting prophecies soo you can just farm up 6L, 36 Strongbox, etc all the powerful prophecies and ignore everything else. Do you people not understand what balancing is ? Harvest sucks! But look at my decked out gear two weeks in! Labyrinth salt farm miner. "But my build diversity" , "Game is too hard!" - Meta drone playing the same 1-3 builds for years. Theres nothing inherently wrong with having to go to a lower level area as a design.
If you're willing to argue that backtracking is a bad game design in general, you won't win that argument, as there are dozens and dozens of games that successfully implemented backtracking, and far more backtracking than you'll ever have in PoE. If it interferes with your pre-conceived idea what the game is about - in this case, efficiency- that's entirely your problem. The option to seal the prophecy exists if you consider the prophecy to be beneath you. but ironically, you also dont want to spend the coins (which can only be spent on prophecies as well as sold for currency) to seal them. So we arrive at this situation where you don't want to sacrifice currency or time to deal with a RNG 'loss'. My conclusion is that you always want to 'win' without ever 'losing'. It's a quite striking similarity to people who whine about map drops and dont want to grind lower level maps in order to go up the pyramid of maps (which is entirely possible without buying a single fucking map). Again, if the game gives you methods that aren't efficient as you want them to be, it's your problem, not the game's. Unfortunately the player base is too entitled, so if theres something that interferes with efficiency, they scream foul, grab pitchforks and make a list of demands. |

For everyone saying they played "PoE because it was hardcore" and shit.
Game basically didn't change outside the fact the average person can actually get to maps in a timely manner. You still have to spend hours learning about a large variety of convoluted mechanics, you still have to spend hours farming, you still get one shotted randomly. Just because the special club of 1337 people don't exist anymore as a glamorous achievement (Wow you managed to kill NORMAL dom) doesn't mean the game is worst off, the game would had completely died if people had to solely rely on watching streamers RIP at level 70 20 times as entertainment. " I Read first few posts and no wonder you get downvoted as that thread doesn't seem to be about loot at all. The issue with Prophecies is that it forces players to spend even more time in irrelevant content. It's kind of weird that the whole challenge league revolves around randomly forcing players to run zones ~20 levels lower than they'd run otherwise. Perandus had its issues but at least you could do the temporary content while mapping (if you wanted to max your coins you had to whirl through Solaris for hours though so the same issue still lurked there as well) and it was impossible to completely skip it. Improvements to trading had far greater impact on power creep than Cadiro. Most of the older challenge leagues did better job in bringing their specialties into game without altering the flow of the game itself (progress through normal - cruel - merciless - maps remained intact). Leagues like Beyond or Invasion were far less cumbersome than Prophecy while still managing to be more difficult. And yeah, power creep could be mostly fixed by just removing the trade (but I guess 90%+ of the people who whine about Perandus being "free loot league" wouldn't actually want to remove power creep but just remove T1 gear from the "filthy casuals"). |
