why is the tcp timeout still 6 sec after all these times?

For the record, I didn't (and don't) like the logout delay in D3.

To restate my position (by popular demand):

1. The timeout to logout a character should be large enough to prevent interruption of normal play.

2. Without violating #1, the timeout to logout a character should be aggressively minimized so that players who have unintentional connection issues are punished to the minimum extent possible.

(So far I doubt OP or goetz disagrees with any of this.)

3. To avoid giving a competitive advantage to players with less hops to the PoE servers, this timeout should not be user adjustable.

4. To avoid giving a competitive advantage to players when they logout intentionally, a delay should be added to intentional logouts; if the timeout is x milliseconds, the intentional logout delay should equal x milliseconds minus the worst ping result initiated with the past x milliseconds.

You are correct 1 & 2 aren't the issue its what follows that is.

"competitive advantage" I'm sorry but people in life will just have better things then you, better computers, better ISPs, better location to gateway servers, ect. They shouldn't have an overall worst then the best possible experience because other people that don't have all the things going for them.

Whats next you tell me I can't use an SSD because not everyone has them and can afford to use one? Its essentially the same line of thinking, almost socialist (can't think of a better word ATM).

Not only that the issue goes far more into the amount of work and redesign it would take to FORCE something that hasn't been forced so far. We've tried to tell you this, but you blow it off as a point that in itself doesn't contain any merit, when the whole argument fails right here at this point.

This isn't like the SSD thing, goetz. That's something which is pretty much under user control. The internet isn't under any player's control (unless they own an ISP). I imagine you can pay more for a better plan from your ISP, but none of this changes the fact that some people are further from the PoE servers as far as network topology goes, and some are closer.

Not to even mention that ISP service often follows the same local monopoly pattern as utility companies.

Paying for a good computer is something I can accept, but having to relocate your residence to get the best possible experience - or ensuring you use the same ISP as the PoE servers, so it can avoid peering - is just outrageous.
When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted.

This is EXACTLY like the SSD arguement. I choose to live in a place that is equal distance to both the DC gateway and the Texas gateway. The funny thing in life is you can pay to change your circumstances, no matter what they are. If you don't have the money, well you can find a way to change your circumstances, even if it takes you longer.

People have the option to choose where they live, they don't have to work where they are, live where they are or do anything related to the current job they have. Unless you are in North Korea or another place that your government prevents you from changing, in which case you wouldn't be reading this.

Some places might be limited on ISP options, some might not be.

Its outrageous to expect me or someone like Helman to have a worst gaming experience because we are in a better location\situation then you topographically and have better ISP providers. Thats just asinine.

You went from having a bullshit argument to just stacking more bullshit and using terms like "competitive advantage" when people have circumstances in life that allow for them to experience the game "better" then you.

Nope, just nope. I'd love for you to redeem your argument at this point, but I'm pretty sure you can't. You want people's gaming experience now that have no issues disconnecting "quickly" to be subpar in order to make the people that have issues have a "fair" shot.

Make my experience worst, because your experience is worst. Talking about dragging someone down with the ship.....

Spoiler
The SSD argument is the perfect one too
