Sneaky Trade Scam Attempt

Gah

I forgot we live in a society with no accountability at all. The future is grim.

Reminds me of the dumbass in my guild 2 days ago who got "scammed" because some guy offered him 60c for an item that was really worth 5-10ex but he sold it without checking poe.trade and only found out after when he received another much bigger offer...but the problem was of course not him but the "scammer"

Remember kids....we are all victims and we have no control on our lives. Our failures are not failures but the failures of others...we just have to figure out who and point fingers.

it's your guildie's fault for not checking

You sure? This thread seems to indicate that he should have called the cops and the marines for immediate action.

You know you are getting old when you read threads like these.

People in "my time" learned to be accountable and responsible. So what I do is this...and I expect nobody here to follow suit...

When I receive an offer, I actually search the item and ensure the price is still valid. What if the price went up due to demand increasing? what if the price im given by the buyer is incorrect.

Id rather not blame others for things that I have 100% the power to prevent. I also dont believe in asking the Devs to waste their time trying to protect me from....myself.

So I do what adults in my time did...I spend extra time where i feel there is value doing so in order to prevent regrets.

None of this contradicts what the OP said. It goes along with it, really.

Anybody wanna try to give some real arguments in favour of the scammer, rather than cheap rhetorics?

This game is some kind of RPG? We are exiles? He is playing his role... well. That's expected by ggg and everyone who tries to oppose this system is being told "your claim is against our intention".

We all know the so called bad examples of bad communites... LoL, Dota, CS, ... but right here, if someone acts like a dick... he just plays his envisaged* role as an exile. Be a dick too or stay away from this community :>

It is the word you were thinking of, but it's the wrong one: GGG is not a role-playing company, it's a game company. We're all smart enough to understand that the name "ARPG" does not imply that you have to actually be playing a role. We're playing a game. The (alleged) scammer was being a real dick, not a pretend one.

This guy seems to be a dick in every world which is disgraceful...
But being a dick in Wraeclast is just fine...

I am sorry you felt dismissed. I don't believe that you were.

I didn't feel the responses were dismissive of me, just of the possibility that the alleged scammer was either lazy or a non-native speaker, and that he modified the PoE.Trade template as a means of making an offer, not in order to mislead.

"
The fact is that the scamming method presented in the OP is a possibility, which is very probably used by a few people (at the very least one, by his own admission in this thread). The more people are aware of that possibility, the better.

I agree with that. It didn't strike me as an efficient scamming method because I feel that the sellers should keep track of (or look up) what price tags they set for their stuff, but I can see that this isn't so practicable if someone has very many items listed.

And then the discussion deviated towards whether it is right or wrong to lie in the virtual world of Wreaclast.

For myself, my take on that is pretty simple and straight-forward: I don't have multiple personalities, or different sets of standards depending on where I am. When I interact with other people, both IRL and online, I am "me" and I'm fairly consistent in my morals.

Roleplaying is only a valid argument in my book if all participating parties are aware that it is roleplaying when we behave outside of our normal behavior. Everything else is, in my opinion, just an attempt to justify immoral or anti-social behavior. I also feel that people's online behavior is frequently more representative of their true nature than the adjusted (by fear of consequences) behavior they display IRL. But it's also dangerous and potentially unfair to generalize that.

Other people have their own moral compasses, and that's fine, too. It's why we can pick our friends and those whom we trust.
That's right, Mivo.

And that's why this entire thing is a non-issue. People can play whatever way they wish in the buying and selling aspect of this game, within GGG's guidelines.

As far as the rules of PoE are concerned, no scam attempt took place.

If a person feels that they 'cannot handle the heat' of bartering in the wild with the random, faceless and nameless citizens of Wraeclast, then it's THEIR OWN responsibility to NOT participate in it.

The solutions are already available for the trade-weak.

1) Play self sufficient. Use vendors & masters.

2) Trade within a like minded circle of friends/guild.

3) Form a free for all guild and share cost-free with others within.

4) Git gud.

Precisely! I agree with every detail.

Aaaand we're back at playing with words. You can replace "scam" by "dishonest behaviour" everywhere in this thread. It is not a question of legality, but of morality. And it is not an issue but a warning. We all know that you're allowed to be dishonest in Wraeclast. This is one specific way that some people might not have been aware of. Now more people are.

Or: stop being a sociopath and remind people that if you're a bad person in Wraeclast, you're a bad person in real life.

I miss the good ol' Diablo 2 where you could turn yourself against your own team and kill them then loot their stuff and even take a ear as a mememto.

I had an inventory full of ears xD
