POE is already Pay to Win. What can/should GGG do?

You are allowed to pay real life money on a third party site to acquire items. That is not pay to win ....

Now if a game has a system ingame that allows players to post items to be traded ( Auction House ) for real life money that is P2W.

Actually this is not correct. These sites don't have to hack. The process works like this: Let's say I get some uber rare drop in POE and I want to earn some real money from it. I go to this site (let's call it SiteA) and trade it with someone on SiteA for SiteA currency like ForumGold. I now take this forum gold and convert it real money by one of several methods (for example using D3 AH).

So now I have converted my POE drop into real money, SiteA has a POE item, which can be traded for POE currency by someone else using SiteA and then come to POE and trade for POE items.

No hacking involved, just people trading on forums.

Fair enough, I have not visited such sites so I have no idea. Either way the point stands that it is not going to mess up the economy, because all items, no matter how they are currently obtained, adhere to the ratios that GGG set. So Economy stays good.

No one is also mentioning that lots of players (Myself included) would not use these sites for fear they are not legit and my account would be hacked. It is the reason that GGG will not restore these accounts because it would unbalance their economy.

It is not pay to win. It is pay for work. You pay someone else to do your work. Which means there has been used gaming hours to obtain that specific gear. In a pay 2 win game you would be able to buy Xp-boost, MF-boost, dmg-boost etc. Things that would be important to buy, if you would have any change to be as strong as the other gamers.

If you are buying gear on the "black market", then you're just paying for them to play the game for you. It has nothing to do with pay 2 win.

PoE isn't going to be P2W, that's just silly talk. Cheaters happen and no amount of coding is going to fix someone who wants/needs to cheat or break rules to get what they want. I hope the majority realize this game is FUN at the core and with some tweaks will deliver on balance issues down the road.

If someone can't manage playing and finding the joy in getting gear themselves, GGG isn't going to change their game to accommodate the few.

They've shown over and over they're doing this game how they want, not how you, or me, or anyone else in these forums wants. I believe this philosophy is why it's so popular.

Just my opinion, but based off past statements from GGG, I'm going to continue to believe they'll stay true to their game until THEY prove me wrong.

All these threads about how this game is going to die or fail or suffer are conjecture. Taking D3, a game many of us played and quit for whatever reason. And yet D3 is going strong.

GGG and PoE are incredibly anti-p2w; the only f2p game I know of that is not p2w currently.

There is a huge difference between first and secondary markets.
Secondary markets will always exist (as long as player-to-player trading is allowed), but unlike the actual game, nothing is guaranteed. There is no guarantee that you won't get scammed, tricked, or since secondary markets are against the game's ToS, banned without hesitation (as is GGG's prerogative).

Someone already pointed this out.... but basically OP is saying every game is P2W.

What you just described with the transactions happening over a 3rd party site on a forum is the same as you giving your friend 5$ IRL for an item that just dropped while you two were playing together.

You can't expect GGG to waste resources on trying to stop all these 3rd parties for the (probably really small) community that is going to use their fat wallets to get some sort of advantage.

I also don't see how someone doing this affects you as a player, especially if you're playing in the default league. Maybe for the HC league, I get it... you're in it to be competitive. I know I would just laugh when Mr.FatWallet dies and his character gets moved to default, knowing he spent IRL money to try and get the advantage and was still bad enough to die.

This has to be the most poorly thought out logic train I have ever seen. It equates to "Because some scum will rob old ladies lets just make it alright for everyone to do it!"

What you are saying is Pay to cheat, not pay to win. And yes, its difficult for GGG to contain it but there have already been bans on people using the site even though GGG has not come out and said it.

I agree with you. However, it's not a small community. D2jsp is one of the biggest forums on the internet. I believe it's the third biggest.

Its considered P2W because all the items on the RMAH "cant be acquired in game otherwise".

Lol .. people think the items on the RMAH are posted by players that farmed them and that the RMAH is a system created to protect the players trades and avoid the dangerous 3rd party sites.

I dunno for sure never played Diablo 3 but it is what people say in PoE forums.

So the conclusion i got.

- buying items farmed by players on a 3rd party site IS NOT pay 2 win.

- buying items farmed by players on the RMAH IS pay 2 win.
