kill the hp node requirement

CI builds use 0 hp nodes.
The game does not adapt to you, you adapt to it.

and then following an ele build as a ranger, but that's stupid being forced into a single viable build for a character

The question you should ask yourself is, are you ignorant enough to believe that there's only one build in this game?

If yes, then you deserve 50% of your passive nodes reserved into HP.

you can think what you want but at the end of the day it's pretty much the truth, stacking defensive and armor is the only way to not get face-rolled in merciless.

who would have guessed, getting defensive stats is needed to survive the hardest difficulty

the game is free and not going anywhere...there is no prize for rushing to "end-game" and getting bored. try out a ton of builds and gear especially at high levels and i bet you change you opinion.

It's hard enough getting decent gear now that im 67, let alone good gear, I built my own tree (for the most part) it has high eva dodge chance and good crit, but at the end of the day i can't even solo docks which is 5 levels below me, theory is one thing practice in another entirely.
I don't really mind the emphasis on defense, but it seems like the game's structured kind of poorly for it. You can play through normal difficulty just fine with virtually no defense and no penalty for death, but then the higher difficulties slap you in the face if you haven't been building your build around the assumption that the game's going to kick your ass later and that it's actually going to matter eventually.

The big problem with this being that there's no real feasible way for a 40-60 character to refund enough points to fix your skill tree, especially if you went in the wrong direction. Assuming you don't know better you end up running into a brick wall sooner or later if you didn't cautiously plan out a defensive endgame build from level 1, which I would grant is a legitimate complaint and I'm pretty sure that's what the OP's suffering from.

Could you post your build possibly?

its early on, you just saw that you didn't spec enough ehp for your gear level. i suggest making a new character and putting that one on the back burner until you find some upgrades with your other characters.

this isn't supposed to be a 1-character game anyway. just have fun...

gear too please that is 1/2 the build.

in the absence of gear...yeah you have no HP in favor of all that crit dmg which if its not supported with crit gear and high rpm attacks its not as useful as you may think imo.

I will point out that you said "top players"

So... your issue is that the early way to farm is to stack life, so you die less, so that you can get more exp, so you can be at the highest level faster....? HUH?

Of course the top end players don't want to die. They also run in groups, compliment each others builds, and farm ONLY the most efficient areas.

Here is a thought for you. This is a game. Play it to have fun. Being an ARPG, if your idea of fun is whooping on the same content for hours on end, you can either build something that is very efficient at it, or your idea of fun and farm a lower area until you can get enough gear/currency to progress. Mostly, the top players will stockpile the GODLY drops. More likely than not, you will see a huge shift in what they are looking for in a few months. They will then all reroll a new character, with new theory crafting ideas where they implement this GODLY gear. Then they will still survive about how they do now, but have double the damage. What happens next is the forums cry about how they can never find good gear. The hardcore players hope and pray they do NOT nerf this game, or raise the loot drops, because all the top end players and all the theory crafters know this already.

So chill. Either play for fun and build what you want and figure out how to make it work. Or stack defense and hp, "slowly" kill things either solo or in a well-organized group, and start looking for better gear. Eventually you will have the gear to make a more inventive build. This is how APG's work.
I guess I will have to buy a one way ticket to hell with your lives
