Regals, augmentations, Exalteds... Just to nitpick. :p
adding mods can always make an item worse (less valuable/desirable).

Most people are spending tons of effort linking/socketing items that aren't even properly rolled to warrant such an investment.
Most people also don't realize that to even support the mana/life cost of that 5-link you need pretty amazing gear.
4-link your stuff.
Find a godly item? Awesome. 4-link it.
Now go find another godly item. Now and only at this point is it worth it from a cost-benefit perspective to invest in 5-linking. If you try earlier than this, your godly item rusts in your stash while you sink all your wealth throwing thousands of orbs at it.
I just have very little sympathy for people trying to 5-link items that will get replaced in two weeks. Of course you're going to throw away thousands of orbs. That's the cost.
By the way: there is only ONE way to artificially hold the cost of a 5-s 5-l 6-s or 6-l where it is now under the OP's proposed idea. GGG would have to implement a mechanic that favors losing a socket when you have many sockets already. Same thing with links. You might be just as frustrated with such a system as you are with the current one. At least there would be some sort of discernable pattern, though, and you would know when you're "close" and when you "missed" that key roll.

In that case transmutations, alchs, chance can as well... I knew someone would state this. It adds something to the item, making it better. It doesn't matter if it's the mod you want or not, it WILL make the item better. It might make it have less value, though.

Found your problem. You think you need a 5L. You don't, you WANT one. Big difference there sir.

Your opinion differs to mine and many others. Why should a system make it so that any time you take a gamble you end up in worse shape than where you started? The downside should be the loss of currency, not currency + the item you invested towards.
I can't see how that is a GOOD thing.

"Gambling is the wagering of money or something of material value (referred to as "the stakes") on an event with an uncertain outcome with the primary intent of winning additional money and/or material goods."
Nothing here states I get kicked in the balls for wagering.
I'm trying to be respectful here and I would advise you to at least try to see both sides rather than insult me. Thanks.

Your gamble doesn't always fail. So I don't understand your point.

It's like I'm playing "Press Your Luck", however, this is a video game and "Press Your Luck" isn't exactly a fun game show. I only watched it for those silly looking Whammy animations.

The item is what you're wagering. The currency is merely a means of "rolling the dice"
