Back from Diablo III, the truth in one TLDR post

This kind of argument made more sense in the early days of D3 when people were expecting it to be a spiritual successor to D2- Since then, especially post RoS, D3 has broken from that vision and really gone off in it's own direction. PoE by contrast has held to much more of the overall D2 core gameplay tenants, albeit with a number of innovations and design decisions of it's own.

The two, despite being the predominant modern ARPGs aren't really fighting for the same niche/crowd anymore. Honestly I think people are continuing to argue over it mostly out of habit and to quell misplaced animosity towards the proponents of the other game built from years of this same tired argument.

Personally I prefer PoE because what I want from and ARPG is a hardcore-gaming-focused spiritual successor to D2 with enough complexity to character building and mechanics to create ample room for clever niche builds even the devs hadn't really anticipated(Three-dragons-theorycraft4Life!). With that said I wouldn't argue D3 is garbage- it's a very different sort of game and I don't feel compelled to trash it just because it's own strengths play less to my sensibilities.
