If there is really spyware in installer/client/whatever produced by GGG i encourage OP and other knowledgable ppl to sent proofs and word of mouth to mmo and arg websites. Go for Massively, mmorpg.com, rpgcodex maybe and other big news websites - they will be more than interested in something like that.
Also websites focused on softare/hardware security will be interested for sure.
PS. Dont go to gamespot - it looks that they are deep into GGG pockets and asses. :)

To my fellow US citizens,
My generation, my father's generation, and his father's generation all fought and died to keep and protect the rights you all have as free citizens of the U.S.A. Now it doesn't even bother you when a freaking game company goes behind your back and violates those rights? Man, what a let down, what a waste.
I can understand your frustration, and kudos for making the decision to uninstall the game as per your principles.
But the very fact that you can uninstall it, and thus end whatever monitoring that may occur, removes it from the list of freedoms that many fought and died to protect.
The lasting testament to the establishment of a country like the US (and mine) is the fact that you have the choice to do so.
Let us not dilute the sacrifice of millions by glibly referencing them as part of a patch for a computer game.
My apologies for any offence.
No offense taken, and likewise I realize some may view my statement as an overreaction. The question is how much freedom, how many rights, do you have to give away, to stand by and let be violated, before it is time to make a statement. I'm very sensitive to privacy rights in this digital age, I've had a computer hacked before that cost me time and stress and I've been a victim of identity theft that cost me quite a large chunk of money, so perhaps I am more sensitive than most.
The reference to the sacrifices was not meant to be a glib one. It was far more in reaction to the calm acceptance of rights being violated than it was to the facts of the instance (computer game patch).

I'm a forum warrior, i was born to post, raised to defend my league. Now my post has been removed, chained and exiled by mods who Ban. Ban is my brother; i do not fear it. I see it in the eyes of men and beasts that i troll. It will take me to play the actual game when i am ready and i am not ready.

GGG isnt the damn NSA who collects your data and keeps it for years, GGG checks for the damn hax programs, get real, this isnt an issue and you should know that. But i ahve to start wondering how old you are to not understand GGGs position better.
BTW, did you call your government and ask what data they have on you? Because you would be surprised about what they know about you.

I edited my original post because I don't think what I wrote really applies, I reread your post and saw that my knee-jerk reaction was a little off the mark.
Again, apologies for that. I don't have a lot of sore subjects, but this is one of them :)

Wow, just wow. These comments. Do none of you understand the right to privacy? Do none of you understand that trust is a two way street?
GGG snuck this crap onto my computer, behind my back, lied about the purpose of the patch, violated my privacy because they didn't trust me not to cheat. Am I supposed to then still trust them not to use their newly installed capabilities maliciously or to access personal, private, data? Hell no, I expect them to be a sneaking, lying, untrustworthy skunk like they've just proven themselves to be.
I've already uninstalled PoE, will never be reinstalling, will never have anything to do with Grinding Gear Games again, so I don't give a shit about their forum rules or any damn thing else that concerns them at this point. However I had to relog back on these boards just long enough to post this message.

What an embarrassing statement.

Note that Valve (ala Steam) also would be termed spyware by the OP.
It used to track outgoing traffic to see if anyone was contacting known bad servers and would count that toward a VAC ban. It does other similar things now, unreported, in the never-ending war of attrition to provide people a decent place to play competitive games with each other.
http://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/1y70ej/valve_vac_and_trust/ for more reading and a good explanation of why developers (or at least Valve) would go to such measures.
---
IF GGG is actually walking the process tree and IF it's taking any actions on that at all (up to and including phoning back process information), then it's fine to disagree with GGG and uninstall the game on principle. Should probably actually verify these claims before taking them at face value from a throwaway account on reddit, fwiw.
Presumably the reason why they delayed on anti-cheats for the longest time (and consequentially were not able to ban people that are "obvious" cheaters) is that they didn't want to escalate the conflict if they could avoid it.
Big name cheat software, recently prominently displayed on the poe subreddit, has probably forced their hand.
---
To the OP, I think you've said your piece. If you're done with GGG, you can leave here at any time.
