At 5 hours a week the league would be half over by the time he finished playing act 3 merc.

There's no unfairness, you invest time and you get something out of it. If you only invest little time you get little. Perfectly fair.

dude, I don't know what world you live in but investing 5-10 hours per week in a game is a fucking lot, lol

i work and study in university at the same time and can spend more idk

For the majority of games: yes. For this type of game: NO in any means. Games like POE count in 100's of hours, maybe 1000's, and thats what they SHOULD be too. (from your supporter titles I'd bet you have (a better?) understanding of this...)

Now, the more you're limited in your 'investitions', the more you need to find your 'place' with what offers you fun:
-concentrate on one or two chars to build up high
-use the better economy in temp leagues to accumulate wealth ('common' things are cheaper here, later on - towards league's end - also more rare uniques too)
and the most important 'rule' and "option":
-dont expect too much. You cant compete with much more investing people in (nearly) any case. You cant afford (or expect) all-BIS in no-time, so you'd better not align your opinion on 'whats cool' on what maxing-everything shows you.

You be surprised how extremely slow "casual' players progress.

On top of that they usually also roll like 4 different characters and play them at the same time.

Hi!

I know this is gonna cause a lot of hate, but have you considered going the way of the wallet warrior?

POE is geared towards dedicated players. I have played since closed beta and only in the last few months have I found gear which allows me to farm high level content. That allowed me to get even better gear and also collect lots of crafting currency. I hate trading and the engine is too unoptimized to allow party play on my machine, so the going was really slow in the beginning. Having a full time job and some RL hobbies also didn't help.

Anyway, I'm prepared for the flames coming my way, but this is my honest opinion. POE is too gear dependent and drop-starved to allow casual solo self-found play. And that is also OK, it fills a cool niche.

Have fun!

You know that's not allowed here, right?
I like many kinds of games 😊

Yes, but what consequences does this have? There are lots of shops selling stuff for real money and I can't think of a fail-safe way to prevent them. So skipping the initial grind via RMT is definitely an option for people who want that. And I'm sure there are a lot of those.

Just to clarify: I rather spend my money on microtransactions, but if I had known just how insane the grind is, I probably would have bought some gear way back then. As it is, I have found enough good gear after all these years that I feel no need for RMT. But I understand people who pay to win, not everyone is willing to invest this much time in a game.

What do they "win" but imaginary bits? I understand that such cheap "things" shine like a 'minor crime' - but all those little dumb greedy BUYERS feed these shops and keep them alive. Fighting them means ignoring their offers, as shiny as they may look.

Everything is 'right' as long as others do it? Or as long as "I only affect myself"? RMT is killing games - not keep them alive. Its a shitty business made from what should be a hobby instead.

Add on Topic: the 'average player' needs more understanding on mechanics, rules and (realistic) expectations.

No, they gain the fun of playing a char which can do high level content. There are any amount of threads by frustrated people who hit the gear wall at about a3m and quit the game. This is because around level 60 you have to be very lucky to just find gear which is better than what you are using.
So yeah, they only get bits, but that is true for any game you play.

I imagine the fun doesn't last long once you have BiS in every place and cannot progress your gear any further. But that is something every one must discover themselves. From my experience I can only say the game is more fun than ever before for me, because I finally found some good gear (and bit the bullet and traded most of my Chaos for 2 pieces I really wanted) and now struggle in 75 maps rather than the sceptre of god. The drops I now find are much better, too.

In my eyes: The latter. I don't trade much, I hardly party. Why would I care about the fact that someone else has a 6L Shavs, and zillions of exalted orbs? They don't affect me. And you'll never be able to get rid of RMT, it fulfills a real desire of some people.
