I think a GGG response on Vaal Oversoul is due.
" One of the major reasons dominus is skipped in lvl 78 maps on hc. Edit : however i think this is more or less a latency issue, combined with the ability to blink and one hit ko. Edit 2: cool read mark_ggg, happy you got a response anu, peace, -Boem- Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes Last edited by Boem#2861 on Jun 23, 2014, 8:53:30 AM

Quite some time ago, when I first started playing POE, I thought that this and other desync was coded on purpose on all bosses that warped or disappear/reappear like Dominus, vaal, and flicker spiders. I honestly thought it was some sort of an image the bosses put up ( like a hologram ) so that they could sucker punch you while invisible.
When you think the game is screwing you on purpose you actually become very adept at avoiding deaths, turning a blind eye and ignoring the sync issues. Saying things like desync isn't bad, or not very noticeable is a lie. I'm sure there are lots of people like myself that had lots of WTF moments while learning how to deal with the sync issues and never posted anything about it. Hell I'm 100% positive there are still players experiencing desync on a minute by minute basis and don't report it. I'm 100% positive because I'm one of those players. I desync like a motherfucker but I don't care anymore..... I just throw my hands in the air and say "that was an awesome hologram sucker punch!" or "I didn't see that one coming!" or "where am I.../oos.... oh, yeah this is a bad place to die" echo "The world is full of smart people" |sed -e 's/smart people/sheep/'

" This is a good summary of where we are, having played through beta. It's a point I made earlier and a 'wall' I wanted to try to break through with this thread. As you can see from Mark's response, as far as they are concerned, it's rare. This is purely because beta players have accepted it and new players are told they are noobs and should learn to deal with it. I'll also reiterate the rather bizarre situation we have now, where those actually trying to defend GGG, or rather do what they can to not make things like this look so bad, actually, without knowing, make things look really bad. "It's your fault, noob, for not knowing how broken things are" :/ Casually casual. Last edited by TheAnuhart#4741 on Jun 23, 2014, 11:03:47 AM

What is another observation is how small group of 'defenders' is.
Currently is consists of not more than 4-5 hardcores and few new faces. (New faces mostly play the rmt game as after d3 closure they have to make money somehow). How bad that this coincided with 'uber axe disaster'.. |

" To be fair, either sides got their share of quality posters which just go in circles without actually giving any useful feedback anymore. I rarely enter a Desync related thread and can think "Wow, this is actually detailed feedback!" or "Hey, that suggestion is sound, I wonder if GGG can implement something like that!" Yes, there are the always familiar faces on either side which rarely bring something new up. Doesn't mean that feedback is lost, especially as developers rarely are driven by either waves. I can see where you are coming from, thou. That thread is really an example for your issue: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/954699 Short: Make your post rich in content and actually useful so the important audience will take their time to think about it. No, the audience aimed for in Feedback or Suggestion sub-fora is usually not the Fanboys/Haters. ;-) On-topic: I am also one of those guys encountering the walking animation associated with the smash several times by now. I learned to fear it pretty much for the reasons listed in the OP: The attack is deadly and one can sometimes not rely on your own very eyes. Really glad to see that changes are pressed on now. Mark, your post is an interesting read.
one thing though: fixing the code that's responsible for Vaal's behavior is indeed required, but I do hope you realize, that doing so you are only addressing a symptom of a far, far bigger problem. a problem I have absolutely no doubt you all are aware of, and have been aware of pretty much since this game exists. you don't really need Mark2 (a.k.a Neon) or Anuhart to tell you client-server synchronization is absolutely abysmal, and becomes actually worse than abysmal (if there's such a thing) given the slightest latency spike. so my question is, what steps have you taken - on a global level rather than fixing the code of one boss in the entire game - to address this issue? now would be a really good time to list them. because we are past years of Alpha, two Betas, a Release, and an Expansion to that Release. "My best guess is: none, not due to laziness but due to "principle," because making the client any better than it is now at predicting future gamestates itself, rather than relying on the server for results for pretty much everything but character skill animations, would be an "unacceptable security risk," due to a black-or-white-no-shades-of-gray policy which refuses to differentiate acceptable from unacceptable risk by actually analyzing the scope and function of which hacks become theoretically possible as a result, while hypocritically giving a free pass to maphack because long ago they couldn't find any other way of transmitting map data without it being hackable. Oh, and in response to the original topic: without desync, Vaal Oversoul is a very easy boss once you know the mechanics. With desync... well, any encounter is artificially orders of magnitude more challenging with desync, and thus the only way to "balance" content for desync is to make everything laughably easy. Vaal Oversoul is fine; fuck desync. No seriously, fuck desync. When Stephen Colbert was killed by HYDRA's Project Insight in 2014, the comedy world lost a hero. Since his life model decoy isn't up to the task, please do not mistake my performance as political discussion. I'm just doing what Steve would have wanted. Better create content that the entire hardcore player-base will skip if it cant be cheesed.
That's a lot better dev resource investment imo. Peace, -Boem- It could be like a tourist guide, "behind this door in the lvl 78 pallace map is a boss nobody in hardcore has ever layed eyes upon without him being frozen. They say his mechanics are impeccable, but none have dared to test it." Freedom is not worth having if it does not include the freedom to make mistakes
