A disturbing trend (Games are supposed to be hard)

Have you guys ever played either Demon's Souls or Dark Souls? Yeah.

Loved Demon's Souls. STILL haven't had a chance to play Dark Souls. :(

Definitely a great example of difficulty done right. Do something stupid? You get ruthlessly punished for it. >:D

hard = EQ1 raid.

72 man in a raid. 45min boss fight, 1 person screwing up ONE time. wipes the whole raid with about 2 hrs of prep time going into it already:D

hard is getting your arse handed to you by a pro fireteam and end up with a 0/45 KD ratio in a FPS :D

game is supposed to be fun. however there are different flavors of fun. sometimes fun is roflstomp hundreds of trash mobs on the ground, sometimes fun is dying over and over and over and over again to try to do something absolutely perfect down to the last millimeter... and sometimes fun is getting everyone in your group to do their job perfectly that the game seemed boring :D it's all depending on what type of fun you are seeking. that's why there are different genre's of games like FPS, ARPG, RTS, MMO, MOBA etc...

try not to cram such a large concept such as fun into a single game. you will fail in 1 way or another if you tried. fun is different for everyone and at different times different for the same person. just enjoy the game :)
Ok one level of hard I can't contend with is trying to play an FPS against pros

well

maybe thats because I am that bad at FPS and it is simply not the genre for me

but even still, now that I think about it, once I got my knife on and started getting kills, just like in any other games, it was more rewarding because it took so long to figure out a way to get kills.

such an immature and blasé statement.....

play hard games if u like hard games
play easy games if u like easy games
play pink games if u like pink games
etc....

all games that are played and enjoyed by people have a right to be there. and don't talk about trends dude, cuz trends is what people make, not companies (can't we decide what we want to buy/play or what?)...just take a look at that (in my unimportant opinion stupid) gangnam style horse dance from that korean guy or harry potter or whatever...people seem to like it...

so don't make hilarious statements...

No

2 rules:

1: Win

2: If you can't win, leave. You don't deserve to be a gamer.

Would you look at that

I doubled it.
If a game has no difficulty to it, then it is more like a movie or a book. Yes there are varying degrees of difficulty associated with different games and different ways said difficulty can be expressed. However the defining thing about all games is that they have some degree of difficulty associated in obtaining a reward.
Thus games are supposed to be hard (read difficult if that helps with comprehension).
My issue is with confused people who seem to believe an interactive movie where one has to press one of four different buttons when prompted to keep the movie playing is a 'game'. While this is perfectly fine and acceptable form of entertainment, it does not fit the widely accepted definition of a game.
There seems to be a growing group of people who have been tricked into believing that these interactive movies or books are actually games, and while I can understand that some people may well fall into this category of people and have little or no idea of what a computer game really is, being ignorant is really no excuse to expect that computer games provide an experience that is suitable for the interactive media crowd.

Also use of the word trend was around a lot longer than the marketing trend to use the word trend as a buzz word or before any trends were trending on twitter. ;)
A trend I've seen in gaming for the past 2-3 years is

"I've bought the game, therefore I have the right to own it l33th4x regardless how shit I am at it."

Some games will bow down to that right from the start, or in an added patch... Most games that bow down from the start I find is console games such as Battlefield 3 on xbox with it's auto aim assist or a patch on pc Guildwars Thunderhead Keep, a brilliantly challenging mission that required players who had a clue until the demand on forums it was 'too hard'.

I grew up with Total Annhilation, Half Life 1, Fallout, Deus Ex, guildwars1. The general 'Well, there's a problem here but I am jolly well not going to tell you how to solve it!' type of game.

I enjoyed solving the problems, sure as hell I got fucked off when I realised I was stuck [Half life one, anyone think to turn the fan on, jump onto it then hit the wood boards apart and climb into vent?] It made for good conversation with my friends. I don't talk about it when played xbox games because...it is so handed to you on a plate. Minecraft, what happens when I open my inventory? I gain an achievement, plastered onto my profile for all to see..WOW. When I told my friends I blew up the super mutant base in fallout1? That was a proper wow as they were still stuck on it.

Someone said relating this to likes, food etc is silly. I relate this to sex. Some people want to come right away. it's cheap. Others want to prolong it and enjoy it. An appreciation.

*Shrug* Random thought there :)
If GGG chickens made an action RPG, what would it be called? Path of Eggxile, a Peck 'n' Slash RPG.
Why was the helmet spluttering? It was a coif.

Hailrake is a good example you referred to. 99% of gamers do not find it remotely acceptable to die 26 times to learn a fight. I myself have had a lot of trouble with him, considering hes able to cast his spear while not even on the screen. Fighting random mobs and having a spear hit you from off screen that does 20% and freezes you is not difficult, its bad design.

Oak is another example of a badly designed fight. People have died instantly to him.

GGG has intentionally made the optional side quests much more challenging than the main areas. There is a reason Hailrake is so powerful. It's the same reason that the Ship Graveyard Cave is so dangerous and the Church Dungeon too.

The average gamer seems to have fallen into the trap of assuming that every character they play should be able to defeat every enemy and succeed against every challenge the game presents. How is THAT good game design?

You don't have to fight Hailrake and you don't have to fight Oak. If you don't wish to attempt those fights the game allows you to skip them.

Good point, and yes that is exactly the mentality of the casual/bad players of this generation. If the hardest difficulty is too hard, don't do it! Games like god of war, halo, etc had extremely difficult levels such as titan mode and elite, and catered to the hardcore crowd while also to the casual crowd.

But in an rpg style game, having a mode like titan or elite is a very touchy issue, as everyone feels entitled to do hell (d2) inferno (d3) or merciless (poe), as it is more or less the point of the game. So a game like this will NEVER cater to both crowds, unless people are happy not making it through the hardest difficulty.

Being a hardcore gamer myself, I am happy to hear that GGG is putting their foot down and sticking to what they believe.

That's why they are implementing Lvl 28 PvP and probably other non end-game character levels
