Alpha testers aren't paid. Alpha testers have access to most patches a week or two before hitting beta, if the patch is large we may have access to it for longer - but it will come in chunks, so for example if large patch X has changes 1,2,3,4,5 - We'll get 1 & 3 for a few weeks, then 4, then maybe 2 and 5 right before it hits beta. Most of the testing is internal, and people in beta (understandably but incorrectly) place a lot of weight on the alpha testers that simply doesn't exist.
