Character names, where did yours come from?
Many moons ago I ventured into a Text-Based MUD known as Valheru (Which spawned into the popular MUD Vahalla). I was god knows how old, probably 9-10. It was my first online gaming experience.
While picking a name, I couldn't think of one..so I chose to randomize the name. Elinol is what popped up, and over the years I've played with it to where it's now Elynole. and now you know. |

My character name is made up from the Predator language from one of the Alien vs Predator novels released years ago. I've used it for about 18 years now
I usually write it as Dai'Kahn but most places/games don't allow apostrophes. The original full version of the name I created was Dai'Kahn'Tor Last edited by DaiKahn#2578 on Sep 29, 2012, 2:47:47 AM

I have troubles coming up with In Game Names or even Usernames. Some of my past usernames has been things like: Qwetis, Cho (my last name), Honcho, Latief, J7C3 (Johnson Cho, 7 letters in first name, 3 letters in last name). I still have troubles to find a user so I just used my student number for school; which is 166601 from my old school. (666 ;] easy to remember) Now it is 727600, but I added 12 at the end because some game sites need more than 6 characters to be a valid username... so I got stuck with that ever since...

In high school I joined the track team and my first day I introduced myself to the coach. Later he asked again what my name was and then replied "ok, moose." 12 years later still more people call me moose than they do by my real name, in fact when my friends hear my name they wonder who the hell it is the person is talking about.
To make this nick, my roommate in college saw me becoming an atheist (I went to a christian college, went in conservative christian, left a libertarian atheist, ironic huh?) so one day he called me Moosifer and I loved it. Another one from a friend was Moosolini which I also use time to time. I guess I remind people of a large devil figure or dictator. Finished 17th in Rampage - Peaked at 11th

How did I get my user/character names? It's a long story.
When I first started playing online games like Neopets and Runescape as a child, I used unimaginative and generic usernames like "cool_guy123" or somesuch. Later on, in my early teens, I decided that I needed something badass-sounding, so I came up with "Xerrex." I eventually grew out of that phase, and began to feel rather uncomfortable about how pretentious and egoistic "Xerrex" sounded. Also, I realized at some point that I'm usually not very good at competitive games, and would be unable to live up to the pretentiousness of names such as "Xerrex." For quite a while, the main online game I played was Soldat, where the default username was "Major." In the spirit of non-pretentiousness, I came up with a name that is both cleverly punny and self-deprecating: "Major_noob." It was quite a good name, and I especially enjoyed knowing that whenever I made a kill, the other player would see this humiliating message: "You were killed by Major_noob." As good a name as "Major_noob" was, it loses some of its clever punnyness outside of the context of Soldat and its default "Major" username. The next time I needed a username was for Minecraft, and I felt like I needed a more fantasy-themed name for it, so I looked on the internet for fantasy name generators. I found one such name generator with options to select the culture of the name. There happened to be an option for Latin-sounding names, which appealed to me since I have always had an interest in classical history. From the list generated, one name, "Oede" caught my eye, probably because of the unusual "oe" diphthong. However, it was a little too short, so I added a pseudo-Greek ending to make it "Oedeios." I quite like how that turned out, and it also fits well with the steampunky skin that I later put on my Minecraft character. About a year and a half ago, I got Steam and started to play TF2. Obviously, A fantasy name wouldn't be suitable for TF2. I needed a new name, preferably one that is also a bit whimsical, like TF2 is, and non-pretentious. I did a cursory search on the internet for tips on coming up with a username. I came across a page that mentioned the tried-and-true "adjective-noun" method of username-crafting. I quickly decided on making the noun part "squid." I had always liked squids and other molluscs, since they can be very intelligent, have colour/shape-shifting abilities, and are really tasty. It also helps that in Minecraft, they are a bit derpy-looking, contributing to the whimsical image I was going for. For the adjective part, I wanted something that is a bit cooler, for a contrast with the derpy squid part of the name. I decided on "voxel," which is cool-sounding, and also alludes to Minecraft. I've been using "VoxelSquid" ever since, and even made my own steampunk-squid skin for my Minecraft character. --- As for coming up with names for characters, I've actually had enough practice over the past few years that I can consistently come up with unique fantasy names for my characters. I start by imagining what the character would be like and fitting him/her into fantasy archetypes, (eg: male lawful-good cleric, female elvish archer, etc). I then play around with syllables from fantasy or real-life names that I associate with these characteristics, until I eventually find something that sounds right. In fact, if anyone needs help naming their characters, I can probably help think of some suggestions. Here are the names of some of my PoE characters: -Kaedalur, shadow -Esseilys, ranger -Vanaedris, witch -Gauillente, templar -Rheilona, ranger -Soreile, witch Alteration Orb Union Local #7
