Officially Supported Linux Client

My son and I used to both play this game a lot but we have since stopped playing because of the lack of official Linux support. Attempts at running the game on Wine were sub par and didn't really make for an enjoyable experience.

I definitely look forward to seeing the game come to Linux (specifically Debian) and would be happy to play it once again!

Just thought I'd put my 2 cents in.

Same. Really like PoE and suffered through CB, OB and some time after release playing on a patched up wine. Now that there are a lot of options on Steam I haven't touched PoE in quite a while.
incase you didn't catch it, the Q&A mentioned Linux/other non windows OS's.
Not good news for you, as it's not coming any time soon.

(Nice thread.)

I really want an official PoE Linux release but let's face it, with everything the way it is right now there is no way this is going to happen in foreseeable future.

Let's look at the numbers, Linux users form just a little over 1% of steam user base, only a portion of those people would play PoE and only a portion of those people would spend any money in the game. There is no financial incentive for GGG to make a Linux port.

You have to keep in mind that most developers who ported their games from Windows after Steam started supporting Linux don't maintain their own engines. Most of them already used game engines with Linux support so their ports were relatively easy to make. In order for GGG to support Linux they would have to copy every single DirectX API call as an OpenGL API call and then maintain feature parity with every update, that's a lot of work. And as I mentioned earlier it's work that they would have to pay out of pocket for.

Also judging by all the comments and bug reports I went through as I'm trying to get PoE to work well under wine, the performance has been going down steadily with every update. And so far I can't find anything else to blame but messy code (I don't like to complain about fellow dev's work but let's face it, we have all pushed something into production on Monday morning before caffeine kicked in) and messy code is harder to port.

So that's the sad truth behind PoE port that will probably never be. I'll keep working on improving performance under wine, last night I played for a few hours and everything ran fine except for a missing font (easy fix) and the game slowing down when there is a lot of enemies on the screen. I'm going to try to recompile wine to squeeze some extra performance out of it tonight, if I have a breakthrough I will post about it in another thread.
