The inevitable has happened...

It would be nice if they hav some sort of moderator for chat as someone stated in a previous post. I can tell you from witnessing it first hand that there was some sort of smack talk/belittling going on last week (dont remember what it was about) a dev was on and politely asked the person to knock it off. So I'm sure they dont have any tolerance for that behavior it's just a matter of putting a system in place to deter it.

Abbreviating the word does not lessen the insult. However, I thank you for proving the point further.

Much like hiding the letters.

If I say:

You're a faggot.

or:

You're a ******.

It's still the same thing.

Which is why traditional chat filtering is so ridiculous.

My thought is this:

First off it's not a simple solution but it's fair.

When some 'tard starts spouting off, people will start setting /Ignore.

I propose that the /ignore flags start passing back to the moderator or even a spider-bot that watches for this type of event. Any player that receives 20 new /Ignores within a one minute window immediately has a mute put on his account for 24 hours.

Mute would block from adding to ANY public chat, only Whisper would work. The offending individual receives an Automated /whisper telling them of the ban and how they can petition to get it lifted by Whispering to IwasMuzzled

If a player gets 10 mutes in a month, the mute becomes a one month mute.

(Actual specifics of qty/duration to be set by GGG, points of reference only)

In this way, the community can manage their own.

Seeing as the game is F2p and it takes a few minutes to make an account, this would be super easy to exploit.

Yes can create new accounts, but in the mean time the primary account is blocked. THis will not bypass the need for moderation.

Additionally the muting can be based on IP address, not just account name. Yes, still able to be bypassed, but the reality is that what I have suggested will address more than 95% of the problem cases.

It wasn't meant to lessen the insult, nor prove a point. Just spreading straight-up, good ol' internet hate

Epic first post, amirite?

I think you misunderstood my point.

For example - I want to troll you. I create 10 accounts, I mute your account on all of them. Suddenly, you're unfairly hit with a month long mute because I felt like trolling.

That kind of system is way too open to abuse.
Player mods, in most cases, do more harm than they do good; particularly if their actions aren't reviewed by someone higher up on the food chain. Chat filters are more or less a joke. All player-input systems can be exploited.

Generally, the best things to do are just a spam filter (>5 posts in a 5 second period results in an hour silence usually works well enough) and an ignore function. If those are in place, people who whine about chat can just be given a dealwithit.gif.

Also; there's no such thing as offensive material. Unless you want to be offended, you can't be. If someone is unstable enough to get offended over words, a picture, etc; they're likely more of an issue than the person who offended them.

Sorry, that is BS.

And I'm offended by how large of a pile of BS it is, too ;-).

You are correct, I did misunderstand you. But that is exactly why I left the ability to ask why did I get /Muted?

As soon as a moderator looks it up and sees all the /ignore coming from the same single IP address, they would most likely just bas that IP address for Trolling, and release the mute on the target.

You could just as easily make it so that the Spider-bot looks at the number of Unique IP address /ignore complaints as well.

Again, any semi-automated system can be bypassed, that's where the live GMs and moderators step in and squash the trolls and exploiters. BUT, by having a system in place that removes 95% of that drudgery they can focus on helping players instead of patrolling the chat.

IP addresses can be changed very easily. I just think an automated system of this type would be way too easy to abuse, though there are some systems that could be automated so long as a human moderator double checks things before decisions are made.
