Path of Exile is 100% free to play, for everyone, forever. Our website will allow the purchase of many in-game perks and aesthetic upgrades, but all of these are completely optional, and players can have a complete, fulfilling gaming experience without spending a penny.
I spent more here ($15) than I have in over 1k hours in League of Legends play. I can live easily without perks/aesthetics.

What if Jay made D3 not as good, so that Chris can make PoE a success?
What if it was intentional?
What if PoE was to make use to the huge D3 fanbase and ride on it's failure to deliver and suck over the fans?
Will the Wilsons be the death of ARPG genre games? (if D3 and PoE fails its consumers)?

rumors are GGG actually OWNS Blizzard and made D3 bad on purpose to make the light on PoE brighter.
