pls add gold to buy items
I really like the current system best. In most games I've played, gold eventually becomes worthless.
This barter system is really unique and fun in my opinion. |

This is probably the best currency system I've seen in an RPG.

Yes, so Diablo 2 had a very bad gold system, and suddenly it’s one of the few arguments to justify almost any other currency system?
I’ve read the Dev diary, and responded to it as logically as I could. My biggest issues with the current system is this – - It’s cumbersome. There’s like 15+ currency-items planned for this game, each one requires inventory space, so you’re telling your players to stock up on both items and currency-items in order to trade effectively. - Values are relative. Unlike gold, every currency-item has a relative value depending on who is looking at it. Some people might think this is a good currency-item, others might think it’s useless. - Entry into the system has a much higher knowledge requirement for new players. You can solve one of those problems by having a currency-bag holder that can carry unlimited, or a high # of currency items. Essentially a part of the UI where all your currency items are held would decrease the cumbersome nature of the system. The problem with Diablo 2 is that there weren’t enough gold sinks in the game and too much gold dropped. That is why gold had no value – there was no reason to have it. If GGG took every currency-item in the game and turned it into a gold sink, you’d have a pretty effective way to sink gold out of the economy. On top of that, they could always add more gold sinks. A gold system is much less cumbersome, and gold values are much more universal and easier to understand. The knowledge requirement for gold is essentially: “This is expensive because it’s a big number” isn’t very difficult to understand for new players. Diablo 2’s gold system failed for good reasons, but the gold system is still viable see: Any modern MMO. Happy Days Abound. Last edited by Silver#3607 on Sep 16, 2011, 9:21:05 AM

" I think that's a bonus pro point for the Orb system, not a con. I suppose it's very individual though... I like the way the currency items work though. Joined Closed Beta 20th August 2011

It's a con if you expect a quick and easy trading medium - bartering by its nature is slow and tedious. Most new players may not find that fun.
You might find a slow and tedious trading medium fun, I know I certainly don't, but that's what it is. Edit: I'm not saying that there aren't ways to alleviate the slow and tedious part of the trade system. Happy Days Abound. Last edited by Silver#3607 on Sep 16, 2011, 9:17:26 AM

I love barter economy in this game, it both works and is unique..
We don't need anything like gold being artificially added.. bartering adds to the flavor Also.. hoping we can get player-driven stores in some instanced marketplace instead of regular auction house .) |

" Doing that though would remove the rarity of items and depreciate the value of them. Sure you still might need 2 trasmutations to obtain 1 alchemy, but now you don't have to bother bartering for them anymore. You just go to the vendor and get exactly what you want. The rarity of the drops, and the purpose of the system is then reduced to a money changing game. You don't have to play the game to actually get that rare alchemy orb because you trade up lower/less items for the item you want. The other issue that makes it difficult as well is the price. How would the players set those prices? What prevents someone from skewing the price for the "poor" players to make them use up more than they really need? Why should GGG have to put time into making that? To me personally that just seems like too much overhead for them to have to worry about/bother with when it isn't going to bring them in any more revenue. |

" Hooray for that I don't want to barter. It is time consuming boring and generally unsuccessful. So painful and tedious I wouldn't even bother. I would just play the game making do with what dropped for me. Look at D2JSP 650k users 385 million posts on a site that offers a crappy forum post based trading platform, it mostly exists because it offers a viable trading currency for games that don't have one. |

I'm glad GGG threw out gold as a currency as there was no inherent value in the gold itself.
To discuss the value that currency items will/will not have is difficult at this point since the economy is not fully functional yet (selling to vendors). Once selling to vendors is implemented (hopefully soon) we'll be able to get into what balances need to be made to keep the economy interesting and the currency types balanced.
