I came here from Diablo 3!!! [Please post here if you did as well!]
Indeed. Patiently waited for D3 knowing they HAD to make it eventually...but this...I don't even...they can't replace the revenue stream from WoW, nor should that be the intention. The point should be that making a game to be a good game and not what might increase sales usually results in a better experience and ultimately better sales because of the perspective from which the developers are creating. There's a reason that the best of a game comes from unexpected places. D2's multiplayer was a simple extension of what was an amazing game that blew up because people loved the core game enough that the multiplayer was worthwhile and people cared about their avatars achievements. It was so worthwhile they modeled cash-cow WoW based on the excitement people had from being able show off their achievements and loot that you actually cared about too. WoW is a great game in it's own right, but once you reach endgame you realize that your time is being milked so much you might as well being paying twice to play it. If you have that kind of time, thats fine, but it destroys motivation when your doing the same thing at level 40 and 80 but it takes significantly longer at level 80 because a longer timer means it's harder right? Endgame WoW has mostly to do with having the ridiculous amount of extra time it requires(8 real world hours, one instance, no drops, repeat, 20 trys or 1 month later and you get an item thats good for a drop but useless because it's for a character that is 15 levels below the starting level for the instance...wtf)x(Now you must kill 200 mobs to get 5 feathers when at level 2 it took 6 mobs). These transparent artificial extensions are not fun and actually fill me with a sense of depressive dread. WoW is a lifestyle, not a game.
I guess I needed to get that out. But anyway, PoE definitely smells like a winner because it seems to be putting effort into what matters. The extensibility of the skill system seems to allow for different play styles, different augmentations that stack in different ways that allows different characters to be powerful, but in different ways. It also allows enough trial and error that I can see simple gameplay styles emerge based on unique combinations. I could be missing the mark, but the existence of build of the month videos at least suggests more variety than d3, though I have only watched one. Edit for prosperity. I did not discuss D3 issues much because they have been beat to death, but are valid and completely game-breaking in a way that's going to be hard to patch out. Diablo has no end game. I found this by word of mouth and am very eager to check it out

" couldn't agree more. it absolutely feels disrespectful to mention That Other Game while in game playing PoE. I can't help but wonder though how many of the devs get a little grin when they see people saying how terribad That Other Game is and how awesome PoE is. i <3 minesweeper

While I agree that it detracts from more meaningful player interaction and atmosphere in the community, I would argue that it is a compliment more than inconsiderate disrespect. Calling this game what d3 should have been, should be a badge of honor. This game meets and possibly exceeds expectations of what d3 should have been and unequivocally does a better job than the triple A studio with massive resources and the original blueprints for the game that made the genre. And they failed. This FREE title meeting all of the expectations of the d2 crowd, which is a big shoe to fill, and doing it all from scratch without the backstory and lore, and all much more successfully than friggin' powerhouse Blizzard with a $60 triple A title, which could almost do no wrong before this. I don't know how they could screw it up; They were set up for success from the beginning. I would say that speaks loads to the quality, the care and effort that went into designing and realizing such a great game as PoE. Comparisons are inevitable. Especially when you consider that this game has so much influence from d2 (almost like they could see the future) that the sounds buttons and art style could have really come from some alternate reality d3. Embrace these things as positive, but the whining and beating of the dead horse must stop and gets old...I think people are still wanting to see it resurrect itself from the dead. I for one hope this game leaves a legacy as long and as large as d2, which to me is a compliment because if this game couldn't stand on it's own merits it would be a moot discussion.
Gah, I keep doing that. It just comes out I swear. |

I am only missing a currency at Path of Exile and that you can zoom out. Maybe increase the action and the explode effects on the spells.

D3: by bankers, for gamers.
There is shareholders at Blizzactivision. They are the one deciding, taking the decisions. Not the develoopers of the game. That's why the game was designed totally around the RMHA only. To make money for the shareholders. By bankers, for gamers. |

I like many people waited for D3 to come out, an was one of like 13 people who showed up at the walmart in port orange FL for the midnight release of D3 got home an i find out i cant play until 3am east coast time, that was my first WTF.
My second WTF was with cain an the butterfly witch thing... Tottaly dissapointing. So, after getting my barb to lvl 60 i have no desire to play anymore, whats the point? to play another class an then go through the story again another 4 times. But before D3 even came out i had heard about this game, an signed up for the beta, i got into the test weekend a couple of months ago, OMG this game rocks, im more pumped to play this game then i ever was for D3. Just wish i wasnt so damn poor, i would support these guys. Anyway to all who have gotten in the beta WTG have fun an kick some monster butt for me lol. |

Same, 5 hours into the game and I already feel its enormous depth and potential...compared to D3 which is more like Wowablo POE should be titled the sequel of Diablo2.
Congratulations on making this game and I will definitely dedicate more support after its release simply because I'm glad there's still some game designers out there that actually understands Diablo2 and I want to support them. |
