I actually didn't care for Mercs in D2 eventually. At first they helped make up for some weakness in your character(on normal). But eventually I would have liked to just play without them...except they went and made all these recipes for items with auras and it was pretty much a requirement to have a merc with these items.

I just want to manage my own hero, not worry about using potions on a merc or gearing him out.
Seems like most people want/don't care about mercs. As long as you can still be effective by yourself.
Yes good sir, I enjoy slaying mythical creatures.

It's the majority that still wants em.I would love to see them in the game. It's just something other than your own hero to equip and play around with.Improves effectiveness and gives you extra things to focus on :b.
He withdrew, himself wounded, and was compelled to return home inglorious, weeping - he who had once vainly hoped for the glory of a triumph.
Poll looks better, it's showing up not only on the first page.

I really don't want mercs but if they do make it into the game i WILL use them, or else I will be missing out on extra power.
Well either way GGG said that you can play the game solo if you want. I will probably do that unless the mercs have a cool back story or personality.

Oh and ya the pole does look a lot better.

This post relates to D2-style mercs, as I'm pretty sure that's what the OP was thinking about.

The thing about mercs is that if they aren't good enough to survive, and maybe deal some damage as well, then they are totally useless and nobody will use them. No point in having a merc that dies at the first sight of a monster.

But if they are good enough to survive, and maybe deal some damage as well, then they are pretty much a requirement at higher levels where you need every little edge you can get.

So you can't really say "well, people who don't want to use mercs don't have to, but they're there for people who do want them".
Either no-one will use them because they are useless, or everyone will use them because they are useful. There isn't really any inbetween.

I disagree it could be coded in. The game would check if player has a merc with them than upscale enemy levels if not keep them at default. I think the could just a question if they are going to or if they will even have mercs in the game. Either way they did say that they wanted to keep the game to where it could be played solo or with friends. So i am thinking mercs might be omitted until later stages of the game.

If taking a merc along would raise enemy levels I'd take one along, so the monsters drop better loot.
Thats a no for me. They take out the social side of a game. i saw it happen at GW. It's more fun to party up with a group of people.
Item trading will be less due to people keeping the items for the mercs they want to equip.

This is very true. That's why I think mercs should be temporary and purchased at a cost. They should also result in decreased loot drops because the merc would obviously want their own share of the loot.

The merc should really be treated as if you are playing with another player with all the benefits and drawbacks that comes with.
