Still waiting on a response but a temporary fix that has worked for me is to set my VPN to Sydney (melbourne/other capital cities didnt work, was getting 500ms)

Now I only get the usual server lag but the game is actually playable and fun again.

Using private internet access if that helps anyone else.

Average ping with VPN on is 30ms

Not only Australia, but also Japan realm.
