Don't think there are checks for chaining like that, but there could be something under the hood not stated by someone at GGG that works 'Similarly" to make sure you don't get stray arcs away from a pack of mobs.

So let's see... my Flashback shocking Elementalist used Arc:



Differences:
+20% effectiveness of added damage
2 mana more per use
1 more chain
+9% chance to shock
+3% increased effect of shock

new stat: +15% more damage for each remaining chain

Looks like a quad-totem Arc Hierophant is on my Incursion build list.

that first hit is worth a bit under 2.5 hits (assuming no extra chains from elsewhere), if it could hit one target more then once and you went full worm flasks you could hit 10+ times with most chains remaining or in a more normal situation a rare mob would get hit a number of times at least as high as the number in the pack which would total much higher the the 15% more per remaining chain...

more or less I'm not saying its bad just that its not what I was hoping for personally and honestly mostly because all the splitting back and forth would have looked really cool but now that wont be the case (well not to the same extent)
I wonder if Efficacy would be a viable 6th link for the vaal arc gem. If you're not going the empower route for an eventual extra chain, it adds some more spell damage and skill effect duration for the vaal arc lucky buff to last a bit longer.
I wouldn't go quad-totem... tri-totem+Vaal selfcast would be more fun.
A massive buff that makes it unnecessary to have a dedicated skill for high health targets like bosses? I am incredibly surprised, would have never expected anything of the sort.

SO whats the right ascendancy for self cast?

I can see Elementalist, Assassin, and Inquisitor but not sure which one is actually best.

Do remember the gem you are comparing the new arc to is only level 17, and 2% quality.
