Here Is Why You Lost Me
Long time gamer
Psychologist Huge D2 fan Hated d3...that is what brought me here. **Scroll to the end if you want the TL;DR and to skip my pedantic explication. Let me start with the WHY of how games lose players. Here are the 4 main reasons: 1)Lack of Interest Novelty of the game, it's concept/gameplay/replayability,etc. Lack of Variety and Complexity - The game must be varied and complex. ->PoE fails in none of these aspects. 2)No Payoff If a game fails to reward investment IT WILL DIE. ->PoE does well in this regard. You are rewarded for everything that you do. Even a lvl 1 character can find an orb valued by a lvl 90. ->Lack of PvP rewards seems like a glaring omission but I don't know much about the PvP for PoE. 3)Unfettered distress Without some time-sink which induces or allows for a low-arousal state the game will overwhelm the player and tend to sully the player's general feeling for the game. ->Crafting/Theorycrafting (the awesome skill tree), etc. are great low-arousal valleys in PoE. 4)Shame *meaning disappointment in this context* without hope of recompense/remedy/renewal Any investment carries the specter of shame. Any expectation for future success, whether individual, interpersonal or community-wide, if unfulfilled, will lead to shame. Shame itself is not a hindrance to continued play and/or enjoyment as long as the player can remedy the disappointment somehow. BUT if the player feels a sense of helplessness in association with the shame-inducing event, they are 100x more likely to feel disgust, whether self-disgust or disgust with regard to the game, and quit. Helplessness stung me today in PoE. I was enjoying the game immensely. Made a few characters, leveled a few fun characters for the races to get points, even got a unique-build Templar into HC Cruel(my first character over lvl 30). His name was Donarjuo (Donar is an old Norse name for Thor). Donarjuo died today at lvl 45. The reason for my departure is not losing a HC character (I expected him to die someday) but the feeling of helplessness. I knew he was weak and needed better gear to withstand desync/particle effect overload (or whatever excuse sounds best) and tried to spend some time in the trade channel and on the website and another outside forum trading yet came away with nothing that fit my needs. I spent hours looking for a couple of upgrades with the type of armor/sockets/stats I needed yet found nothing. I pushed Western and found a treacherous spot with faster aura mobs/exploders and those cleave/doublestrike Warriors. I alt-f4 to be safe and came back to a normal-mode Templar. I was not upset or angry, I just immediately lost interest in the game. *Shame serves a positive function as it lets us know when a source of interest is no longer going to deliver. ->The lack of currency in PoE is one of the best aspects of the game yet the lack of Auction House/Consignment Page is the worst. ->In order for PoE to thrive and last it must have some sort of Consignment Page system like DAOC (this would be easy to do within the current framework, just place your item on the website with a few acceptable currency combinations as prices and leave it be, the currency could be placed into a remove-only tab in the player's stash if bought-out. You could even allow auctions which had currency categories for bidders. The seller could prioritize acceptable currency). There has to be some way for people who want to play the game, not the spam-channel, to get level appropriate items and not feel helpless to stay alive. As a consequence of my frustrated attempt to upgrade my armor I ventured off into Western and into the dark arms of certain death. I am left with no interest in PoE. Only a desire to find something else I might enjoy (literally 20 of my ~40 guildmates are playing LoL...guess I have to finally break down and try it). **TL;DR: The trade channel/forum is insufficient to sustain a large player base. There are too many posts/spam messages to sort through when most of us just want to play. PoE is such a good game yet the lack of Auction House/Consignment Page will hinder it's growth and sustainability. -juo P.S.: Thanks for the 2 weeks of fun. I am just a little confused why you play HC when losing a character is going to drive you to this kind of grief. I mean really.
"I alt-f4 to be safe and came back to a normal-mode Templar. " If the alt f4 mechanic was supposed to work reliably there would be an eject button on the UI. lol |

I agree that the trade forum is flooded and a bit of a subpar way of getting what you want at best, but I don't agree with your assessment of things at all. It sounds to me very much like you just played poorly (as in, made poor decisions once you got frustrated) and ran somewhere you really shouldn't have.
If it was Default that would have been no real problem anyways. But since you were in HC, well... big problem. My impression from your post is that you knew you were in a bad spot before you rushed out, so I don't know why you really decided to. Rushed actions like that are probably a leading cause of HC death. I'd have been patient and farmed fellshrine safely a bit. Or just taken a break and come back another day. The items you want are a bit hard to get, but the items in this game also have /amazing/ customizability. You can literally make almost anything you want, given enough time and desire. You just gave up and rushed off rather than sinking the needed amount of time into it. I've spent a ton of time trying to get a new amulet in roughly the same spot of the game, and I finally got one today. It felt great. If I'd rushed on earlier I'd probably have lost this witch like you did. As far as trading goes, you say you're in a guild? I'd assume that gave you access to people to trade with and greatly expanded your options beyond the trade channel. Otherwise, there's several forums besides this one with people who play PoE and they'd be happy to trade with you. Some even have sections specifically for that. You'll have better luck with this than trade chat (although trade chat doesn't completely fail... stuff pops up there too if you're patient - which you weren't!) Well. Sorry to hear that one HC death spoiled stuff for you. Maybe you'll try it again later once the "trauma" has worn off, since it's not like you're paying to play or anything. Hopefully you either are a bit more cautious then, or play in Default instead where you can afford to throw caution to the wind with crazy builds or impulses! And if you want to play LoL, have fun with that too ^^. " Yeah. Using alt f4 in HC really is a bit cheesy. The whole point is that you're supposed to be willing to subject yourself to the death of your character when things go wrong. Last edited by Valeli#0870 on Mar 1, 2013, 8:53:13 PM
