Best ways to make money in this game?

What Shadow build are you playing? I'm currently playing a Shadow (my first character as well) and have been doing amazing with it. Currently level 62 and in A2 merciless. I wouldn't say my gear is great, but it's decent. Don't underestimate the power of Whirling Blades and Decoy Totem. They are amazing for escaping hairy situations with your life intact. Curses are crucial as well. Use Enfeeble or Warlord's Mark depending on your build. Personally, I use them both, but that requires the Hex Master keystone.

People are saying you need to farm, but I have never farmed. Nor have I been lucky with drops - I haven't. I have found one exalted orb, one GCP, a couple chaos/alch, and aside from that the only good item I have ever found was an 18% Flicker Strike. I have wasted most of my currency alching/chaosing items and trying to get the right socket links :(

Whisper me in-game if you need any advice, I'm more than happy to help you succeed. IGN is DavosTheOnionKnight.

It seems like as a trader, you should try to find areas where piles of other people aren't trying to do the same thing.

This comes to mind:

Spoiler
Traders focus on high lvl items and trash anything under level 40. Buy great lower level items for dirt cheap, and create a big store where you sell for reasonable prices. People would look at your store first for items to buy

Of course it probably would suck, don't try this

Given that all non-town areas are privately instanced so only you or any members of your party could join them, why would you go to areas that no one else is farming? I'd assume everyone else is farming those areas as they're the best for one reason or another and go farm my own instance of them.

Oh I didn't mean areas that way. I meant types of trades that are profitable, but not overused.

Oh, gotcha. As I'm not a trader myself I'm not sure where that area would be though.

Probably streaming, if you can get the following for it. Selling black market items is pseudo-illegal, and it's unwise to mix illegitimate activity with making a living; any other form of generating content (rather than items) for cash is pretty much inferior to the streaming route.

Man, you guys have been incredibly helpful. I'm probably going to take bits out of all your advice, and see what I can come up with.

Above all else, I need to progress! :)

You know, I should probably grab Decoy. I haven't thought about it.

At first, I was having lots of difficulty just in Normal mode. Then someone told me I REALLY needed to grab some survival skill points, and maybe get some Energy Shield. I doubled my survivability and pretty much swept through Normal mode no problem, and clean through Cruel Act 1 just as easily (save for those obnoxious suicide larva clusters at the end of the act).

Then as soon as I jump into Act 2, I'm swarmed by like a hundred monkeys, two rares. One had extra health and made his allies unable to die, and the other gave his allies the haste aura and extra physical damage. I basically doubled my deaths right there.

With a little bit of a gameplay change, using more hit & runs with Fire Traps and Lightning Strikes before closing in for kills, I've managed to get through half of Act 2 pretty well for the most part. But my problem is that I'm essentially 11 skill points behind. Ten because I wasted them on useless skill nodes that did very minimal effects for me and now I realize it, and the last one point because I simply didn't get the skill point reward from my Normal mode Bandit Lord quest :/ I wasn't aware of the reward's existence.

My planned build is this...

But my current build is something like... this...

As you can see, I wasted a BUNCH of points getting that Evasion Rating group. I was imagining it would act differently, being a newb & all. If I had, say, 40% evasion, I was thinking with that group adding up to 70% more dodge, I thought it would be 70% more of the resulting 40% from what I later realized was my ACTUAL "Evasion Rating". So I thought it would add 28% on top of the 40% for a 68% dodge chance. But instead, of course, it adds 70% to the RATING amount, which ends up giving me like... Maybe 6%.

And the killer with that is, with my intentions to be going for the Energy Shield talents (I plan on going CI), those give me Evasion Rating bonuses PLUS other things! They're just flat-out better. So, I totally wasted my points. And I also wasted some points taking wrong paths to things. So, ultimately, I need to respec like 14 points, which is a REAL bitch, lol.
nvm just saw ur CI

vaal runs on normal with high IIQ and IIR for tons of blues and yellows.

My question to you all is this, how do you keep up with all the scrolls of wisdom that are needed for that? :) you burn through hundreds of those things in a few hours
