Mao and Stalin were mass murderers who killed tens of millions of their own people. There's no way to sugarcoat it. This doesn't mean they are the only bad people in history or Western politicians are saints, far from it, but one evil does not justify another.

Apart from Hitler and his genocidal madness, from a quantifiable standpoint some of the worst atrocities in history, and perhaps the worst atrocities in recent history, have been perpetrated by self-identified communist revolutions and their offspring. Stalin: estimates vary wildly and there is no way to know for certain but the figures you'll see are anywhere between 10 and 40 million of his own people killed. Mao: AFAIK he killed around 40 million of his own. Pol Pot's Khmer Rouge are less known and less impressive in total numbers, but they are perhaps the champions in percentage of own population killed - roughly 30%.

These are all mass murderers who took Marx's ideas, abused and distorted them to suit their own political agenda and sullied them for future generations, which is another of their great crimes, and one much less known - and more insidious for that.
