That doesn't make sense. PoE should be more popular than D3 in gold farming countries since D3 hasn't had trading for a long time.

Also, I don't know about all red countries there but I'm positive Japan and Argentina have nothing to do with gold farmers.
You have to be realistic about these things.

Nothing statistical is going to be perfect. And note as others said, this is "interest level", not actual gameplay or anything. It's all for entertainment value to see possible trends.

I'm not paying undue attention to the search graph, it's unreliable as Innervation correctly stated. As much as some people hate them, steam charts are a much more reliable indicator of population health and trends. I just found it strange why gold farming should be the reason for the red/blue map.
You have to be realistic about these things.

I would bet that graph also lines up with which countries have school curriculums that include Edgar Allen Poe. And I would also bet that that's a much bigger reason.

Really though, this whole argument is stupid. The game is cyclical, we're at a low point in the cycle. I'm planning options for my next build now rather than playing and a lot of temp league players are doing the same.

These doomsayers just keep doing it because they know eventually they'll be right and then they can feel vindicated in all their complaints about the game. The problem is, when they are right it will be the result of a very slow decline. PoE isn't going to just miraculously blow up all of a sudden, there's too much advertising, interest, and active development in it for that.
Not sure I understand the argument in this thread.

POE is a niche game. It doesn't have mass appeal like Call of duty. The graph I see is what I would expect. Super high interest of many game players during it's release and slowly tapers off to a consistent number of players who ebb and flow based on Leagues.

This is how all ARPGs are. Not everyone finds this game genre interesting. You either like it or you don't. It doesn't help that as GGG tries to maintain it's complexity (good thing) and that games like WoW and Diablo are basically attracting and fostering the Lego Starwars type gamers.

Games have been made overly accessible so most millenial gamers (no offense to anyone here you are an exception) want the easy way out. They want to buy an expansion and get a free level 100 character (vomits in mouth). They want to play a league where all of your set items are sent to your ingame mail. (again with the vomit).

Look. You can sit there and wax poetic and regress numbers on a graph all day...the simple common sense fact is that this game isn't new and it isn't for everyone...as a result, the graphed results is what I would expect.

For example let's compare and older game that was very easy/accessible: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

If you look at the graph for that game, you see a similar spike during the game's infancy and then a level out where only the die hard remain.

Spoiler

The problem with many of the amateur statisticians in this forum is that they take numbers out of context with everything that would counter their point.

Sorry, but what I see is expected behavior for an old game with a diehard (but small) fan base. You guys need to better understand consumer behavior before posting dumb shit...just saying.

You know the whole discussion is "corrupted" when people start comparing PoE to LoL, DotA 2 and CS:GO, three games owned and maintained by pretty much the largest gaming companies in the world.

Comparing is fun!
Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile.

I would expect the game to grow because we've seen GGG's budget grow with big changes like the Labyrinth and act 4 but it seems like it hasn't helped that much. For me, PoE is leaving its niche that you speak of and turning in to a generic boring game like Diablo 3, which is why its not as interesting to me anymore at least. And the changes we've seen so far to this expansion point towards another shit league like Perandus, Prophecy and Talisman.

I would speculate that this graph is more representative of the fact that D3 is available in the mother-tongues of these countries, while POE caters to the most white and english speaking peoples.
