lol, you guys are clueless.
LA explosions absolutely shotgun. The pvp community knows this. You need to use it with pierce and frostwall. Never underestimate what the mod community can do for PoE if you sell an offline client.

You misunderstand.
The projectiles don't shotgun. The AoE explosion damage does. Edit: see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cuaiWUAL_s If you put 3 frostwalls by the boss, have 100% pierce, and shoot once, the boss will be hit by: 1 projectile + 4 aoe explosions (essentially a shotgun of 3 additional aoe explosions, one per nearby target). That's the current cap. With the helm enchant the aoe explosion cap will increase by 3. So with 1 shot you can deal projectile damage + 7 aoe explosions if there are 6 additional targets beside the boss.
