I debated about this for weeks on end during the Closed Beta and eventually quit the game over it. Map system is amazing, in theory. In practice, it's just not fun right now.

I guess designing maps that are a challenge to beat is harder than just jacking the drop rate down to the point where the hardest part of maps is getting them to drop.

Lazy-ass design catering to mindless drones who enjoy grinding more than actual challenging content.

Maps is the best feature PoE has to offer, compared to the lackluster or non existing endgame content games like Torchlight or Diablo have to offer.

Torchlight has a maps feature... only it isn't up to RNG, you just gain access to infinitely generated maps after finishing the game.

But yeah, I find this annoying too. I don't mind a grind every now and then, but this is pretty stupid.

In a nutshell;

Grind to get access to endgame, so you can grind the endgame? Grindception isn't very fun.
Whoa hold on there, you're forgetting the part where apparently in 2013 now, being "hardcore" in an arpg is not about being good at beating challenging content with super large monster packs with tons of special attributes, auras, bunch of bosses or what have you, it's about how tough and manly you are about grinding irrelevant content (where your drop rates are actually penalized, LOL) to even get access to potentially challenging stuff. Because THAT is what is fun and cool and awesome.

Sound like good design? I know it does to me.

No need to get this sarcastic :D! So far GGG has proven to me that they always have very sound reasons to design a certain aspect of this game the way they do/did. Perhaps we simply haven't figured out a way to 'beat the randomness' and still enjoy it, I dunno.

But as it looks now, personally, it is a little bit too much RNG for my liking. I don't mind being too weak to handle the highest level maps, because that will inspire me to do better. I do mind that the game is actively trying to keep me away from those highest level maps (or so it feels).

But does it allow you to choose the difficulty of the map you are entering? What mods you do or do not want to face? Not to mention in PoE it is an excellent combination with the currency system as we have it.

It fits the game very very well.
Basically, people like my spoiled self (according to hardcore gaming authorities like moosifer) want the endgame to be tough because endgame areas (maps) should have challenging gameplay where it's hard to stay alive, and we want to run out of maps because they're kicking our ass and we're running out of portals. Now the "hardcore" (lol) players want the endgame entry to be a challenge because the drop needed to get into an endgame area is scarce and tied to a quirky RNG, and they want you to run out of maps not because you're a bad player or your build sucks, but because you haven't spent quite enough time grinding the same shit for their liking.

NOTHING IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE MOVE ALONG FOLKS.

So what's the difference between farming an act 3 area and doing a million dune maps? First tier maps get really boring really quick once you have ran over a 100 of them...

It's a lot less boring than docks. And you still get xp.

I havent done any maps on OB yet but in closed beta first tier maps would start giving you only a percentage point of experience.

For maps to be worth experience you need to be in the upper tiers, otherwise its not that big of a jump in exp.

Well I guess we're not even there yet because we're not tough enough to beat the epic challenge of RNG map drops. Once I get there (probably by level 78 or so) I'll make sure to provide some feedback on the difficulty of level 66 areas.

Actually from the few maps I've done, it's way too easy. The endgame is just another grindfest rewarding moosifers who think being hardcore is directly proportional to time invested (funny he'd accuse me of thinking like a mmo player when he's the biggest proponent of "stfu and grind moar"), and does not involve actually beating challenging content that's hard to survive in. At least not in the maps I've seen. But maybe it's because I'm level 74 doing maps that are level 66, in this genius RNG-based access system.
