Whatever game I play, I tend to focus on pure beefiness and damage mitigation (dps be damned). Does this approach work in Path Of Exile?

CI/low life summoner is the best tank there is, taking no dmg nodes wont be fun and your tank wont be as effective as a good summoner anyway.

I just youtubed a 'low life summoner' build, and it came up with a witch build similar to my own 'intelligence tank' build, except, I have taken loads of +life nodes, so I'm not a low life build. I still took loads of energy shield buffs, and quite a lot of summoning and minion skill points as well though.
Is there a specific benefit to having low life? As in the game gives you some hidden buffs when you're at low life, thus people aim to be low life deliberately? |

Don't bother with low-life builds unless you are rich or have high-end gear. There are certain advantages to low-life, but as I said, it's only possible to run low-life (and live) with insane gear.
If you are new to PoE, I HIGHLY recommend browsing the class forums for a build that feels right for you. Running a tested build is a good way to learn the ins and outs of PoE without ending up with a useless char that can't get through merciless. Look for a build that suits your playstyle and most importantly... look for a cheap build! Could you elaborate on what the advantages to low life are?

" More auras, ability to take certain low-life bonuses such as Pain Attunement and the low-life Blood Rage attack speed bonus. Basically, it's CI on steroids. Forget about it for the first month you play this game though - it's an ultra end game option. Building pure tankiness will make this game extraordinarily boring for you. Get a good mix. Also - you have a lot to learn. All of those builds are horrendous in terms of efficiency and effectiveness, don't worry about it though - passive tree mastery only comes with experience. They don't call this game complex for no reason. " Weird. But you took Pain Attunement in your "int tank" build. It is benefit for being low-life Want to be "godly", don't even read what you've taken in passives Now let's talk about "builds". What are those even?.. -_- 1) Don't try to "invent" your own "mega-ultra build" when you don't even fully know game mechanics. 2) All those "builds" are utterly nonsense. Some random nodes taken, a lot of unnecessary nodes taken. Not to mention 120 points used in all builds. 3) You can't really be "tank" in PoE, this is an MMO "term". 4) If you still want to be "ultra tanky" - open classes sub-forums and read, and read "Tanky" build require a lot of HP, armor, block (which your builds don't have), spell block, any other possible damage mitigations (including mechanics like Lightning Coil has, for example). And suitable damage on top of that Remember, suffering is convenient.
That is why many people prefer it. Happiness requires effort. |

Another thing you should study up on is the uniques. They provide all kinds of different ways to be tanky.
My current build for example is using to have instant life and mana gain. This helps keep up my Arctic Armour + Mind over Matter combination which provides quite a bit of extra defensiveness. The reduced curse effectiveness is a cherry on top that allows me to run curse maps without significant danger. Another thing you need to be wary of is reflect damage, most new players don't expect reflect to hit them as hard as it does in the endgame. My personal method of dealing with reflect is to use all fire damage, and converting 25% of it to chaos with . This chest also provides a significant amount of Mana for MoM and regen due to the Eldritch Battery keystone. Chaos damage is not reflected, and the rest of my fire damage is mitigated by resistance + arctic armour. Any damage that may be getting through is immediately negated by Thief's Torment and Doryani's Invitation (below). To compliment the HP regain from Thief's Torment, i also use to gain even more life per second. It has a nice armour roll on it as well. To top it off, I combine the Grace aura with Iron Reflexes and . While most people have Iron Skin on their granite flask, i opted to have it on my hybrid flask instead. I keep my flask charges full with crits and use a quicksilver + granite to move quickly while having additional armor rating when encountering a new pack of monsters. There's much more to defensiveness than just picking defensive nodes in the tree, you have to build around it and consider uniques, auras, reflect damage, and more. You also need to think about what flasks will suit your build best. You have to make up for your weaknesses as well. One of the reasons i have these defensive options going is because despite having a large amount of %life in the tree, the only piece of equipment i wear that actually has +life is my quiver. I use my large mana pool and recovery/mitigation methods to make up for this weakness. Some of this is self inflicted as i am greedy and went for for the Rarity rather than gloves with more resists and HP, and to add Critical Weakness on top of the Elemental Weakness provided by the gloves. As a result, this build is significantly more dangerous to play than it needs to be. Last edited by Xendran#1127 on Jun 22, 2014, 4:52:55 PM

Your builds suck balls, a lot.
Srsly son dont go for any of them, you will struggle so hard on merciless. So many wasted skillpoints, no real keynodes, no concept. If you want to play a really tanky and melee build, go with this one: http://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/779147 Its endgame viable, newbie friendly, not very gear dependent (Only concern is DPS, if your DPS is low = get more passive damage nodes, if its high = get more survivability). and very well explained. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me. Last edited by KalHirol#0543 on Jun 22, 2014, 5:01:25 PM

Build guides are great to look at to study how they structure their trees. It helps you learn maximum efficiency. And trust me when i say it takes a very long time with quite a few iterations to get a build near-optimal/optimal with its passives.
